Cuban Trumpeter Extraordinaire Arturo Sandoval Premieres Tunes From New Album At Blue Note January 14 - January 19, 2003

Blue Note audiences will be treated to an outstanding week of music in the company of the blazing trumpet of multi-Grammy Award-winner Arturo Sandoval, “..arguably the most prodigious trumpeter of his generation..." (The Guardian, U.K.), who “...reaches notes most trumpet players barely know." (Washington Star.) Sandoval will perform Tuesday, January 14 through Sunday, January 19, 2003. A Cuban native, Arturo Sandoval had already been a famed trumpet player in his homeland, mastering both the jazz and classical trumpet, before being granted political asylum in the United States in 1990. While still in Cuba, he co-founded the Grammy Award-winning supergroup Irakere and worked with the Cuban Orchestra of Modern Music. After moving to the U.S., Sandoval continued to straddle the jazz and classical worlds, performing with the L.A. Philharmonic and the National Symphony of Washington D.C. as well as with the Dizzy Gillespie United Nations Orchestra, Herbie Hancock, Patti LaBelle, Stan Getz, and Tony Bennett. In the early 1990's he launched an extraordinarily successful recording career as a leader, which earned him 12 Grammy nominations and 4 Grammy Awards. His life story was recently featured in the Emmy-winning HBO drama “For Love or Country: the Arturo Sandoval Story," starring Andy Garcia in the title role. He has just finished recording his latest CD, scheduled to be released later in 2003, from which he will premiere a few tunes at the Blue Note.
