A distinctive jazz artist will reflect the ingenuity of the tradition while presenting a fresh voice that is current, relevant and exhilarating. Michael Hudson-Casanova succeeds in every respect.
—Norman David
Saxophonist Michael Hudson-Casanova is releasing his sophomore album with his first Chicago-based band on March 2, 2023. The release show will take place at Hungry Brain Chicago (2319 W. Belmont Ave) on March 3rd. Animus will be available on digital, CD, and limited edition vinyl formats.

Hudson-Casanova composed an entirely new book of music for his trio with drummer Gustavo Cortiñas and guitarist Erik Skov. Both of these Chicago jazz veterans have their own unique projects and bring a large pallet of sounds to this new endeavor. Trumpeter James Davis also joins the band on one track, and for the release show on 3/3. The absence of bass in this ensemble gives it a wide-open sound with endless sonic possibilities, especially considering Skov’s creative use of effects pedals.

The recording was made possible by a generous grant from Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), and the project also received support from the Illinois Arts Council Association. Singles from the record are being released digitally throughout the month of February. Follow Michael Hudson-Casanova on Instagram for updates—@mhcsounds.
