Brookline High ensembles tune up for Berklee Jazz Fest

The Brookline High Jazz Band isn't afraid of a little funk.

The 15-member ensemble arranges most of its own music, adding a twist to classical numbers and making modifications as it goes.

It's a method that's won the respect of its peers, and one that members are sticking to as they prepare for the Berklee High School Jazz Festival on March 10.

“We do play traditional jazz stuff, in no way is it our focus," said drummer Eli Cherry. “We're lucky to be in a program that gives us so much freedom."

Brookline's large and small ensembles will compete with bands across New England—and some from as far as California—in the college's 44th competition.
