Avishai Cohen was born in Israel, and grew up in Israel and the US. He was introduced to jazz when he was ten years old, living in St Louis, MO. Hearing the incredible electric bass of Jaco Pastorius, he says, “Changed everything”. Back in Israel, he excelled in his studies in classical bass and cello. But returning to the states in 1992, he came back to jazz, studying at Mannes College of Music, and playing regularly with West Hartford native Brad Mehldau.
Avishai has a long lasting relationship with pianist Chick Corea. They co-founded the band Origin, with whom he played Cheney Hall in 1998, and still play together in Corea’s New Trio.
The International Vamp Band is a truly international ensemble. Featuring Avishai on piano and electric bass, it includes Eric McPherson on drums (replacing Antonio Sanchez), Yagil Baras on acoustic bass, Avi Lebovich on trombone, flute and vocals, Yosvany Terry on tenor and alto saxophones and cheker
