To borrow the words of the English novelist Anthony Powell, Stephen Sondheims Night Waltz, from A Little Night Music, might be described as a dance to the music of time. A little giddy, with one foot off the ground and the other perilously perched on tiptoe, the song is the thematic thread in an unfurling Sondheim medley that is the centerpiece of the jazz pianist Barbara Carrolls new show at the Oak Room of the Algonquin Hotel.
Returning to the club after a holiday break, Ms. Carroll has turned her sights from George Gershwin, the principal subject of her fall show, to Mr. Sondheim, who turns 80 next month. Her winter-spring jazz brunch program, which had its second performance on Sunday, continues weekly into June.
