75th Anniversary Celebration of John Coltrane: His Life, Music and Legacy

On Saturday September 29, 2001, the newly formed John Coltrane Foundation proudly presents a “75th Anniversary Celebration," to honor the late John Coltrane, perhaps the greatest name in jazz history and certainly its greatest saxophonist. The gala Black Tie event will be hale at the Beverley Hilton Hotel, 9876 Wilshire Boulevard, Beverly Hills, CA. A reception begins at 6:00 p.m. followed by dinner, an auction and program at 8:00 p.m. Ticket prices are $150.00 per person, with the net proceeds going to the John Coltrane Scholarship Program.

Jazz artists scheduled to perform include Kenny Burrell, Benny Maupin, Dr. Art Davis, Terry Gibbs, George Bohannon, Geri Allen, Robert Hurst, Ali Jackson and many others. In addition, legendary pianist, organist and harpist, Alice Coltrane (the wife of John Coltrane) will make a rare musical appearance. She will be joined by daughter, Michelle Coltrane (vocalist) and son Oranyan “Oran" Coltrane (alto saxophonist & guitarist). another family talent will also surprise the audience.

The event will also launch the John Coltrane Scholarship Program, wich will be managed by the Citizen's Scholarship Foundation of America. The John Coltrane Foundation and the John Coltrane Festival were founded by Alice Coltrane, to encourage, showcase and promote the advancement of jazz through young artists. She is the president and Chairwoman of the Board of the Foundation. Michelle Coltrane is Vice President, while Marilyn McLeod functions as executive director.
