Backgrounder: Tina Brooks - True Blue (1960)

No other category of artist in American history had to fight harder to have his or her creativity recognized than the jazz musician. This war was waged on three fronts—with themselves, with the culture and with their record label. If any one of these three battles was lost, the other two often collapsed as well. In the 1940s and '50s, the battle with one's self meant steering clear of drug addiction. The battle with the culture was the struggle to ...

The moment I heard that Tina Turner had died yesterday at 2:45 p.m., I started writing. I knew what was about to happen. Within minutes, I heard from the arts editor asking for an appreciation needed asap. An hour and 45 minutes later, my essay was done, fact-checked and filed. Tina was a force of nature. Driven, high-energy and charismatic, she had three careers. As a member of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, she was instrumental in their many ...

Tina wasn't his real name. When Harold Brooks was young, he was nicknamed Teeny, which at some point wound up as Teena and then Tina. Back to the Tracks was recorded in September and October 1960 but not released until 1998, when producer Michael Cuscuna found the tapes in the Blue Note ...

The outer limits of jazz is where saxophonist Tina Richerson resides, a world in which experimentalism becomes the unifying thread. On the latest album from the Tina Richerson Trio, Up Against the Rail!, traditional jazz is given a slap, flirting with dissonant or uneasy textures. In other words, it actually tosses jazz back into the groundbreaking sonic landscapes that once enabled it to light the world on fire. Up Against the Rail! is a visionary work, one that finds order ...

God gave this talent to me, so I just stand there and sing," she once said. The remarkable Tina ...
