Penny King

Penny King is a jazz vocalist and vocal tutor based in Perth, Western Australia.

She has long been established as one of Western Australia’s premier jazz vocalists, performing with her band since graduating from the prestigious West Australian Academy of Performing Arts' jazz programme in 1996. Penny is as well known to those in the know for her passionate and evocative stage presence as she is for her diverse arrangements of standards and contemporary tunes alike, as well as her original compositions.

Penny has been a featured vocalist with the West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra, and has made numerous appearances at the Perth Jazz Society, both with her own quartet, as well as being a featured performer at the annual ‘Ladies of Jazz’ concerts for many years. She has appeared at the York Jazz Festival, the Beaufort St. Festival, the 'Jazz on the Rock' Festival for Rottnest Island, and the Fremantle International Jazz Festival. Penny is a regular performer for Jazz Fremantle, and was recently a featured local performer at the inaugural Perth International Jazz Festival in May 2013.

Penny has sung along side such luminaries as James Morrison and Dale Barlow, and, as part of the Mike Pigneguy sextet, supported Dame Kiri Te Kanawa when she performed with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra in 2006. Penny has also appeared for the City of Joondalup’s ‘Sunday Serenades’, and for ‘Jazz on the Rocks’ at the Quarry Amphitheatre. She has also made several appearances at His Majesty’s theatre and is an in demand performer for many local and corporate events.

Her position as vocal tutor in the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts’ jazz department since 2009 is testament to her respected place in the thriving Perth Jazz scene, as is the musicians she works alongside, including industry leaders Tom O’Halloran, Graham Wood, Carl Mackey, Pete Jeavons, and Michael Perkins, to name a few. She holds both a Bachelor of Education and an Associate Diploma of Performing Arts in Jazz. Penny has been a member of the JAZZWA committee since 2004.

She has had an original track featured on the Jazzaziz II CD, released in 2005 by JazzWA. She also featured on the West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra’s 1996 CD release ‘Night and Day’. She is set to release her debut album 'Journey' in December 2013.
