New Direction

Born in Washington, D.C. to a family of musicians and singers, William had an ear for music from a very young age. He recalls being captivated by songs like Frankenstein (Edgar Winter) which to this day is one of his favorite songs. William started playing bass around 1979. In the years following, he learned to play guitar and some keyboards. He always had the dream of producing a CD since first picking up the bass. He has now released his debut CD Pillars and Dreams in fulfillment of that dream. He encourages other to keep perusing after their dreams.

After a nearly three-year partnership, LinkedIn has announced that posts from Twitter will no longer be displayed on their site. The news comes as Twitter works to encourage users to visit its own services directly and not through third parties, or as Twitter's Chief of Products Michael Sippey said in a recent blog post, to provide “the core Twitter consumption experience through a consistent set of products and tools." Previously, LinkedIn users were once able to connect their profiles to ...

Saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa and Pianist Vijay Iyer Launch Jazz in a New Direction

Source: All About Jazz

Years from now, listeners surely will marvel at one of the great partnerships in jazz: saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa and pianist Vijay Iyer.

Each has gone a long way toward infusing the music with elements of South Indian culture. Together, they have pointed jazz in a new direction—or at least developed Eastern elements that long have been dormant in the music.

Yet each has a perspective of his own, as Mahanthappa made clear Saturday night at the Green Mill, where an ...

Joshua Redman Charts a New Direction With 'Compass'

The saxophonist calls his two bassists-two drummers album 'definitely an exercise in letting go.'

A marquee name on the contemporary jazz scene since winning the Thelonious Monk Institute's Jazz Saxophone Competition in 1991, Joshua Redman has played electric, acoustic, rock, funk and just about every musical style fit for a celebrated jazz saxophonist. But before his new album, “Compass," due out this week, Redman had never performed in an acoustic “double-trio" setting, an unconventional, rhythm-heavy configuration where a soloist is ...

At the helm of the ps150.4 Project is Washington, D.C. musician William Neal who has been performing in and around the U.S. Capitol for nearly three decades as well as a memorable tour of France including an appearance at the Nancy Jazz Festival in 2001. Born into a musical family, William had an ear for melody at a young age, in fact as a kid he used to string rubber bands around his books and strum them like a guitar. Fast forward to today, the jazz multi-instrumentalist delivers a stylish and classy debut with PILLARS AND DREAMS featuring an introspective collection of bass-driven grooves with a vintage vibe. The artist says that the title of his recording was inspired by the fact that pillars symbolize strength and are often left standing thousands of years after the building has collapsed around them. According to Neal, “Everyone needs pillars to strengthen them throughout life’s challenges in order to reach their dreams.” Music is just such a strength and PILLARS AND DREAMS holds up ten reflective and thoughtful tunes that demonstrate William’s musical and artful notions. The deep and melodic “Law of Love” and the heartfelt “Wisdom’s Children” are two smooth stand outs that you’ll be hearing on SmoothJazz.com Radio. Progressive and profound, PILLARS AND DREAMS is a collection of jazz tunes that will make for the perfect soundtrack while reaching for your dreams.
