Outspoken, manipulative, independent thinking and oftentimes controversial, Artie Shaw (1910-2004) was one of the most popular stars of the Swing Era, who famously broke the color barrier by hiring the legendary Billie Holiday, Hot Lips Page and Roy Eldridge for his bands. His complex love-hate relationship with his own celebrity caused him to walk away from performing almost as many times as he walked away from his marriages. Winner of the 1986 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, Artie Shaw: ...

In February 1943, bassist Oscar Pettiford joined Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie in a Chicago hotel room and jammed on Sweet Georgia Brown, which was captured on a private recording. This was before bebop was codified, and Parker and Gillespie were virtually unknown outside of the big bands they were in. By the end of 1943, Pettiford was in New York recording for Commodore behind tenor saxophone giant Coleman Hawkins. Rolling forward, Pettiford would become bebop's first major bassist in ...

One of the finest and most rewarding box sets to cross my desk this year is The Enchanting Guitar of Oscar Moore: The 1945-1965 Years. Released by Fresh Sound, this three-CD set with terrific liner notes by Jordi Pujol is both captivating and illuminating. Best known as the guitarist in the famed Nat King Cole Trio from 1938 to late 1947, Moore kept solid rhythm for the group with brief solo flourishes. In 1947, Moore joined his brother's group, Johnny ...

A Craving for Oscar Peterson

JazzWax by Marc Myers
Yesterday, for some reason, I had a yen for Oscar Peterson. I'm not sure what triggered it. Perhaps it was the desire to create a sound wall as I wrote one of my House Call" columns. Or maybe it came as I thought about Peterson's Motions and Emotions album from 1969. At any rate, I hopped on YouTube and discovered 10 relatively new videos of Peterson performances to share with you. Here are the clips: Here's Peterson with Ray Brown ...
