Dr. Herb Silverstein

When Dr. Herbert Silverstein, a world-renowned ear specialist who heads the Silverstein Institute in Sarasota, Florida is not treating ringing in the ears, he is captivating them with music. A classical pianist in his youth, Dr. Silverstein decided to forego studying music to become a physician. It would be 30 years before he touched the keyboard again. He relearned piano at the age of 48 with help of friend and mentor, Richard Drexler (who has recorded over 300 CDs including such artists as Mike Stern, Gary Burton, Danny Gottlieb, and Dave Liebman).

Richard encouraged Herb to write his own originals, instead of just playing covers. Now he has found the perfect balance between his love for music and medicine.

Twenty years and 9 CDs later, we introduce his new CD, “BEACH WALKER,” featuring all original tunes with Herb Silverstein on piano, Richard Drexler on bass, Jack Wilkins on flute and tenor sax, LaRue Nickelson on guitars, Joel Spencer and Steve Moretti on drums and The Lobster String Quartet on tracks 2,3,5 & 9. Dr Silverstein is involved in extensive research for innovative new treatments and develops new procedures and devices used all over the world to assist the hearing impaired. He feels both careers go hand in hand, as there is improvisation in both.

Proceeds from CD sales help fund The Ear Research Foundation and in the past 12 years, he has raised over $120,000 dollars to help the hearing impaired.
