Asef
Asef is a Vancouver-based quartet that brings together jazz improvisation with the melodic and rhythmic traditions of the Middle East, drawing additional inspiration from Balkan music, klezmer, flamenco and bebop.
Formed in 2024 by saxophonist and composer Saul Berson, the group features Itamar Erez on guitar, Sam Shoichet on acoustic bass and Liam MacDonald on drums and percussion. Together, the four musicians explore a musical landscape where modal melodies, intricate rhythms and spontaneous improvisation intersect.
The name Asef has connections across several cultures. In Hebrew, it means “to gather,” “to collect” or “to harvest.” In Arabic and Persian traditions, the related name Asif or Asef is associated with a wise adviser or minister, notably the legendary adviser to King Solomon. These cultural connections resonate with the quartet's philosophy of bringing together different musical traditions and individual voices without losing their distinctive character.
Berson's musical influences have developed over decades of performing and travelling internationally. His experiences living in Israel during the 1980s, performing with musicians in South Africa, and travelling through Morocco have contributed to Asef's musical direction. Two compositions on the quartet's debut album, Fi'yuoon Fes and Settat, were inspired by a journey through Morocco in 2024.
In October 2026, Asef released its debut album, Confluence, recorded at Monarch Studios in Vancouver. Featuring five original compositions and three interpretations of existing works, the album moves between atmospheric modal passages, lyrical melodies and energetic ensemble interplay.
At its heart, Asef is about musical conversation: different backgrounds, traditions and perspectives coming together to create something new.
