Pocket Quartet

Combining the freewheeling groove and grit of mid-century blues and jazz with original compositions and instrumentation, the Pocket Quartet consists of David Dvorin on electric guitar, Randy McKean on contra-alto clarinet, Tim Bulkley on drums, and Matt Langley on soprano and tenor saxophones. While only formed a few years ago, the players’ connections run deep, with Dvorin, McKean and Bulkley having performed together for years on multiple projects, including the groups Flounder and Stinson Trio. Top-notch soloist, Langley, was added to the lineup after moving to Northern California from his native New England, where he chalked up over 40 years of professional work playing with notable jazz artists, easily fitting into the group’s unique musical aesthetic.

Incorporating tight arrangements with creative improvisation, Pocket thrives in a live setting, performing regionally throughout Northern California as well as touring the Pacific Northwest. Currently, the group is featuring bandleader and composer Dvorin’s recent music inspired by hard-boiled detective fiction of the 1930s-1950s, depicting shady characters, sordid scenes, and pulse-raising action. Their debut release, Hard Boiled Music, is slotted for release on Cure-All Records in the Fall of 2025.

“With pieces titled after characters such as Benny the Fink and Flim-Flam Man, attendees can expect a musical narrative that captures the essence of cunning and mischief. Dvorin's innovative approach to storytelling through music is set to bring a fresh and engaging experience to the audience."
