Thomas Julienne
Thomas Julienne is a double bass player, composer, and arranger who continuously pushes the boundaries of music. Known for his eclectic style and insatiable curiosity, he has made a mark on the music scene with energy and innovation. His Algerian, Norman, and Indo-Vietnamese roots embody multiculturalism and openness. He began by exploring the guitar and experimental rock, but it was the double bass that became his true playground, where he blends jazz, classical music, and free improvisation.
Trained by French double bass masters such as Jean-Paul Macé, Kent Carter, Gilles Naturel, and Jean-Philippe Viret, he developed his skills in orchestration and arrangement with experts Christophe Dal Sasso and Carine Bonnefoy.
In addition to his work with “Theorem of Joy,” he composed “Dysnomia Live,” music for a photo-concert with Alexandre Dupeyron. He leads the Orchid Big Band and composes for this large ensemble of 19 musicians. He collaborates with DJ Click on projects commissioned by RFI International (Science Fiction, Sudan, and soon Laos). With “Claude Trio” and Sophie Bataille, he created “Le Voyage de Claude,” a drawn concert for young audiences. He shines especially in duos with artists like accordionist Laurent Derache and Raphaëlle Brochet. As a sideman, he is featured with Panoramic Project, UHT from the Orchestre Les Cordes Croisées.
A sociologist by training, Thomas applies his knowledge to jazz: he co-founded the collective and label Dé luge and sits on the board of directors of Grands Formats.
Thomas Julienne is an accomplished musician, with a strong aesthetic vision and a strategic sense regarding the institutional network, and he knows how to surround himself to best develop a project.
