Georgios Prokopiou

George Prokopiou (Degermetzoglou) was born in Chalkis, Evia in 1983. He took his first music lessons at a very young age, taught by Greek traditional (folk) musicians. At the age of ten, his family settled in Athens in order for him to continue his music studies at the Nikos Skalkotas Music School and more specifically in Thanasis Polykandriotis´ traditional music branch, under George Pachis and Manolis Michalakis. At the age of 28, he moved to Stockholm, Sweden. After five years in the Nordic country, he started collaborating with the Scandinavian Taximi Orchestra, with which he is still a partner. In April 2021, Prokopiou was offered a record deal that would include orchestral work of his own composition reminiscent of 1970´s Greek traditional laiko music playing in Greek restaurants (tavernas) at that time. George Prokopiou, after having accepted this exceptional proposal, hereby presents his first orchestral work entitled “Akropolis”.
