Backgrounder: Sonny Stitt - Tune-Up!

Backgrounder: Sonny Stitt - Tune-Up!

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Perhaps the high points of Joe Fields's Cobblestone label were a pair of albums by Sonny Stitt released in 1972—Tune-Up! and Constellation. Both were produced by Don Schlitten. On Tunre-Up!, Stitt played alto and tenor saxophone and was accompanied by Barry Harris on piano, Sam Jones on bass and Alan Dawson on drums. What made this album (and Constellation) special was Stitt's commanding speed, clean lines and bebop fluidity. I remember buying both at Sam Goody in Manhattan that year ...

Sonny Stitt: Tune-Up!

Sonny Stitt: Tune-Up!

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Back in 1971, when I began to listen steadily to jazz, I was nuts about an album that had come out that year by Sonny Stitt and Gene Ammons called You Talk That Talk. I was a freshman in high school and had taken up the tenor saxophone, an instrument that was much cooler to tote around in its case in school hallways than to stand alone in a room and practice scales. Back then, Stitt was for me. He ...

Pandora Is Out Of Tune With Songwriters, Says CD Baby Founder Derek Sivers

Source: HypeBot

As Pandora shareholders convened their annual meeting this week, the streaming music giant’s executives predictably omitted an ongoing battle with songwriters over royalty rates in the hopes of focusing attention on the company’s recent growth. By CD Baby founder, author and entrepreneur Derek Sivers. It originally appeared on TechCrunch. But when it comes to Pandora’s relationship with songwriters, investors would be wise to dig deeper. Dexter Gordon: "Ernie's Tune"

Dexter Gordon: "Ernie's Tune"

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

In the late '50s, Jack Gelber wrote a play called The Connection, which dramatized the lure of narcotics and the stark perils of addiction. The play—which opened in New York at the Living Theatre on July 15, 1959—featured jazz musicians who were initially going to improvise music on stage. But when pianist Freddie Redd wrote a score, he persuaded Gelber to use it and Redd, alto saxophonist Jackie McLean, bassist Michael Mattos and drummer Larry Ritchie performed it during the ...
