Bill Evans: On Green Dolphin Street

Bill Evans: On Green Dolphin Street

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

To the best of my knowledge, there are only 10 known recordings of Bill Evans playing On Green Dolphin Street. Composed in 1947 by Bronisław Kaper (with lyrics by Ned Washington), the song was written for the film Green Dolphin Street, which was based on the 1944 novel of the same name by Elizabeth Goudge. The song suited Evans perfectly. Here are all 10 renditions: Evans first recorded the jazz standard in 1958 with the Miles Davis Sextet, a spectacular ...

Philadelphia-Based Vocalist and Songwriter Maci Miller Celebrates the Release of Her New Album, Nine, with Video of 'Love Me for Who I Am'

In the field of numerology, the number nine is connected to wisdom and experience. As Philadelphia-based vocalist Maci Miller writes in the liner notes for her new album, Nine, “The number nine is significant because it’s closely associated with the spirit, with spiritual growth, inner awakening and self-realization." Those qualities inspired Miller’s stunning new album, following a nearly decade-long hiatus to focus on adopting and raising her daughter, a period that certainly resulted in a wealth of personal growth and ...

Philadelphia alto saxophonist and composer Bobby Zankel explores a darker side of his longtime city’s history with A Change of Destiny, set for a September 22 release on Mahakala Records. The album is a distillation of music that Zankel wrote for a dance piece, The Spirits Break to Freedom, in the 2010s, and was recorded with Zankel’s Wonderful Sound 8 (a byproduct of his Warriors of the Wonderful Sound Big Band), featuring Philadelphia jazz greats drummer Pheeroan AkLaff, trombonist Robin ...

Ralph Gari on EmArcy in 1955

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

While I was away over the past two weeks, I spent a few hours at a terrific vinyl record store nearby run by guys with long hair and great taste. You know the kind of shop I'm talking about, where everything they spin on their vintage stereo system with 1970s speakers sounds fetching and you must own it. Fear not, I was merely killing time on a hot day, not hard shopping. But I did gather a bunch of titles ...

Backgrounder: Benny Golson and the Philadelphians

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

What made jazz recordings distinct from most other forms of American music were the different combinations of individuals who came together to to record. The results were often fascinating, with different musical personalities creating both contrasts and harmony as a unit and through improvisation. One such album was Benny Golson and the Philadelphians. Recorded in November and December 1958 for United Artists, the LP featured five players who hailed from Philadelphia: Benny Golson (ts), Lee Morgan (tp), Ray Bryant (p), ...

All About Jazz is celebrating Eric Dolphy's birthday today!

Eric Allan Dolphy was a jazz musician who played alto saxophone, flute and bass clarinet. Dolphy was one of several groundbreaking jazz alto players to rise to prominence in the 1960s. He was also the first important bass clarinet soloist in jazz, and among the earliest significant flute soloists; he is arguably the greatest jazz improviser on either instrument. On early recordings, he occasionally played traditional B-flat soprano clarinet. His improvisational ...
