Kenny Peagler grew up in Pittsburgh, shaped by a city where music is both heritage and expectation. From Billy Strayhorn to Art Blakey to Ahmad Jamal, he absorbed a lineage of jazz that felt less like influence than atmosphere.

He began with classical piano, drawn first to discipline and form. At Pittsburgh’s High School for the Creative and Performing Arts, jazz became a living language, soon joined by R&B and soul. The Hammond B3 marked a turning point, becoming central to his sound and identity.

Peagler studied at the New England Conservatory and developed a style that resists easy categorization. Classical music gives it structure, jazz gives it freedom, and R&B and soul ground it in feeling.

His career has taken him across the world, from international stages and storied jazz clubs to performances at Carnegie Hall and the Umbria Jazz Festival, as well as venues throughout Europe, Asia, and beyond. He performed for President Barack Obama at the NAACP Bicentennial Celebration, played for audiences of more than 20,000 at Barclays Center, and received the Joseph R. Biden Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award for his artistic and community impact.

As Director of Music at Washington, D.C.’s historic Nineteenth Street Baptist Church, Peagler brings the same intention to sacred music that defines his concert work. He sees music as a way to connect people to one another and to something larger than themselves.

Through his Learn the Hammond series, he has reached more than 600,000 viewers, making the instrument’s language accessible to a wider audience. His teaching emphasizes listening, harmony, and the search for a personal voice.

His recordings reflect an artist in motion. Lush Life: The Music of Billy Strayhorn reimagined Strayhorn’s work as a living conversation, while We Are Just Human brings together Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten, Will Lee, Poogie Bell, Lakecia Benjamin, and the late Dean Brown in a bold singer-songwriter project releasing in June 2026. A follow-up instrumental release, Before the Words (2027), returns to trio and orchestral textures.

Across church, concert hall, studio, and screen, Kenny Peagler approaches music as a living exchange. His work carries the weight of tradition, the pulse of the present, and the curiosity of an artist still searching. Music Connection recently gave We Are Just Human an 8/10, praising Peagler’s “strong and warm” voice and the album’s exceptional musicianship.
