New York, June 1961. Legendary jazz pianist Bill Evans has found his musical voice and created the perfect trio, including bassist Scott LaFaro, his musical soulmate. A residency at New York’s Village Vanguard culminates in the live taping of two of the greatest jazz records of all time in one day. Only a few days later, LaFaro dies tragically in a car crash. Numb with grief, Evans stops playing for the first time since his childhood. This is the story ...

Throughout jazz history, there have been magical pairings of musicians in  recording studios. Sometimes the union was established jointly by the two musicians. At other times, producers brought them together. These couplings include Louis Armstrong and Jack Teagarden, Bix Beiderbecke and Frankie Trumbauer, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and John Coltrane, Shirley Scott and Stanley Turrentine, Sonny Stitt and Don Patterson, and Donald Byrd and Pepper Adams.  Add to the list guitarist Grant Green and pianist Sonny Clark. ...

Red Garland: Groovy, 1956-57

Red Garland: Groovy, 1956-57

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Pianist Red Garland's Groovy was released by Prestige in mid-December 1957. It was an album comprised of songs left behind on three different recording sessions, but they were hardly scraps. All of the tracks were excellent, and the trio throughout featured Garland's working group at the time—Paul Chamber on bass and Art Taylor on drums. The album was reflective of Garland's work with the Miles Davis Quintet since 1955. His debut record for Prestige under his own name was A ...

Backgrounder: Grant Green, Gooden's Corner

Backgrounder: Grant Green, Gooden's Corner

If you're new to Grant Green and want to really get a sense of why the guitarist was so special, this week's Backgrounder is for you. Recorded in December 1961, Gooden's Corner was among a bunch of Blue Note albums by Green that weren't released soon after they were recorded. In this album's case, the album didn't come out until 1980. I'm guessing the move had to do with the overdose death of Sonny Clark in January 1963, at age ...

Grant Green: 'Live at the Lighthouse'

Grant Green: 'Live at the Lighthouse'

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Guitarist Grant Green had two significant careers. The first was as a Blue Note artist who recorded 29 albums for the label between 1960 and 1972, most of them straight ahead jazz. The other career was as a funky soul-jazz player who recorded important riff-driven albums for other labels starting in 1965 (His Majesty King Funk for Verve). This career was eclipsed by the rapid rise of the jazz fusion movement. One album that bridged these two careers was his ...
