Johnny Hodges: 3 Shades of Blue,1970

Johnny Hodges: 3 Shades of Blue,1970

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Yesterday, I posted on Webster's Dictionary, a rare late-career album by tenor saxophonist Ben Webster and arranged by Stan Tracey that is virtually unknown by even ardent jazz fans. To continue my series on great saxophonists and little-known gems in their final years, today I'm looking at Johnny Hodges's 3 Shades of Blue, arranged and conducted by Oliver Nelson. Recorded in 1970 over two dates in March for the Flying Dutchman label, the album showcased the alto saxophonist with a ...

'Rise Up' Calls For Social Change And Convincingly Urges The Listener To Act Now

'Rise Up' Calls For Social Change And Convincingly Urges The Listener To Act Now

Source: Lydia Dudley

Lydia Salett Dudley is a major musical force. She leads Jazz Xpressions, a versatile group based in Raleigh, North Carolina that frequently blurs the lines between creative jazz, grooving r&b and gospel music. Her latest recording, Rise Up, is the result of a grant for female jazz bandleaders from Chamber Music America that included a mentorship with the masterful singer Carmen Lundy. Blessed with a beautiful voice, a creative spirit, and a purposeful style, Lydia Salett Dudley is in prime ...

Cynthia Basinet Releases Single 'Biggest Fool Of All'

Cynthia Basinet Releases Single 'Biggest Fool Of All'

Source: Cynthia "c." Basinet

The saying “calm before the storm" doesn't usually fit with singer-songwriters. Typically, the “storm" part happens first when they're trying to find inspiration. After that, they put their emotions into music theory and genre with growing confidence. And the subsequent emotional quotient of the fully-fledged song is immediately apparent to the listener who can gauge the intentions of the singer and the songwriter: with the onus being on the arrangement and performance to breathe life and zest into the lyrical ...

Sosala 30 Years Ago: No-wave Improv With Powerful Messages

Source: Sohrab Saadat Ladjevardi aka SoSaLa

SoSaLa has released a retrospective recording which looks back to 1993; when music was made at a special time and with special musicians. For fans who are interested in SoSaLa’s interesting and accomplished music career, this retrospective album is a must. The music on this album comes from the No Wave and post-No Wave scenes in New York, and out of the free jazz scene. There is a very distinct connection here between harmolodics and bands such as Live Skull, ...

Matt Lavelle Supercharges 'The House Keeper' With Bari Master Claire Daly

Source: Jack DeSalvo

About The House Keeper“One of my plans that DID work was expanding my quartet into a quintet with another horn player. When I discussed the idea with my big brother Jack DeSalvo, master guitarist, and producer at Unseen Rain Records, we agreed to ask the great Claire Daly, a good friend of mine and the anchor in my 12 Houses Orchestra to join us on baritone sax. Claire is like me in that we have jazz deep down in our ...

Backgrounder: Johnny Hodges and Ben Webster

Backgrounder: Johnny Hodges and Ben Webster

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges and tenor saxophonist Ben Webster were a perfect pair. Hodges played with a smooth, bluesy sweetness while Webster offset that with his breathy, husky tone. Both recorded together in the Duke Ellington Orchestra in the 1930s and '40s, and they paired off again in the 1950s on small-group dates. My favorite sessions featuring them in tandem is the so-called Jazz Cellar session of November 1960. It was recorded at a San Francisco club without an audience. ...

Clark Terry: 'Color Changes'

The revived Candid Records has just reissued another five albums from its archives. Founded in 1960 as a subsidiary of Cadence Records, the label was overseen by jazz author and critic Nat Hentoff, who served as Candid's A&R director. This meant he chose what to record and how to produce the records. The last time I posted about Candid in April, the label had just re-issued Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus (1960), Max Roach's We Insist!: Freedom Now Suite (1960), ...
