Dan Garmon
In addition to music directing and playing in pits, he has had an incredibly diverse wealth of musical experiences; he actively plays/listens to anything from the generally-regarded-as-somewhat-pretentious (solo classical piano / chamber music) to generally-regarded-as-less-relevant-than-it-once-may-have-been (jazz combos and big bands of all sizes) to hopelessly-nostalgic-for-yourteens-and-having-all- the-feels (pop punk & emo/screamo/mathcore) to the somewhat-off-the-beaten- path (Indian classical music, free-form improvisation and artistic installations), to the depths-of-the-bizarre-and-fantastic (modern extended-technique 12-tone prepared piano pieces, rolling marbles and tennis balls inside instruments) and everything in between.
Dan also has many years of experience teaching dozens of students of all ages (5- 65) and experiences (complete beginner to university level and beyond) in most any style of music. He teaches with depth of musical understanding in mind, trying his absolute hardest to make learning music exciting and relevant. He has learned an insurmountable number of things from his students, e.g. the five year old who told him that a whole rest looked kind of like a hole and thus was able to distinguish it from a half rest. There was also the ten year old who likened the overall structure of a piece to the movie Titanic. There is an endless list, so he will spare you. Regardless, he tries to challenge his students to not just play notes but understand the logic and "grammar" of various styles, their contextualization into [music] history, and the importance of being able to manipulate the music at hand (transposition, varying rhythm and intention, etc). He teaches privately as well as with NYC's Soyulla Artists as well as Riverside Music Studios.
