Mark Adams

Improv-loving ex-expat dependent on sound for atypical journeys

About Me

I’m a longtime North Carolinian who spent more than a decade overseas responding to disasters in Zimbabwe, Pakistan, Sudan, and Micronesia on behalf of the United Nations and US Government. I craved records and live jazz when away, and multiplied listening upon my return in 2016. Jazz and improv place me in the closest approximation of disaster-related and intense experience, challenging me to be fully present in a state of non-labelling and appreciation.

I am on the board of Synchronicity Arts, a nonprofit that hosts monthly improvised music and movement house concerts in Durham, NC. I’ve written for PopMatters and Dusted, and my photographs have appeared in Oxfam Australia, Rotary International publications, The Zimbabwean newspaper and within the novel Zimbabwe: Years of Hope and Despair.
