Lane Garner
About Me
Lane is a guitarist with a passion for improvisation, composition, live performance, and
teaching music. Lane leads the Denton, Texas band Fundamental which combines
original modern jazz with elements of Indian classical music, indie rock, and more. He
composed the majority of the music on Fundamental’s three releases HEMANDHERE
(Armored Records, 2015) Development (Armored Records, 2012) and F. (Self-released,
2013). All three recordings are available through iTunes, CD Baby, and directly through
Lane’s website.
Lane also regularly leads small jazz groups of varying instrumentation with a focus on
original music and standard material. He has experience playing many styles of music in
many settings ranging from jazz clubs, country clubs, weddings, bars, amusement parks,
cruise ships, coffee shops, wine bars, and churches.
As an educator, Lane has worked with students of all ages and experience levels on
many styles of music including jazz, rock, pop, classical finger style, and more.
Lane grew up in the Kansas City area where he started playing professionally at fourteen
years old and studied with musicians such as Rod Fleeman and Bobby Watson. In 2006
he moved to Denton, TX where he was awarded a competitive Jazz Studies scholarship
at the prestigious University of North Texas. Lane holds Bachelors and Masters degrees
in Jazz Studies from UNT. At UNT Lane studied with Fred Hamilton, Richard McClure,
and Noel Johnston and played guitar in the 3 O’Clock Lab Band, Latin Jazz Ensemble,
Jazz Singers I, the L5 Guitar Ensemble, and more. Lane also worked closely with other
professors such as Ed Soph, Stephan Karlsson, Lynn Seaton, Brad Leali, and John
Murphy. Lane has also taken lessons from guitarists such as Gilad Hekselman, Jonathan
Kreisberg, John Abercrombie, Lage Lund, Bruce Saunders, John Stowell, Tim Miller, Oz
Noy, and Miles Okazaki. In the Spring of 2011 Lane took part in a Texas tour with New
York based guitarist Miles Okazaki and performed with legendary Cuban drummer
Ignacio Berroa.
