Justin Pierce

Dallas-Fort Worth jazz saxophonist and One O'Clock alumni

About Me

Saxophonist and multi-woodwind artist Dr. Justin Pierce is a straight-ahead player with contemporary influences, known for bringing the spirit of New Orleans to Dallas–Fort Worth through brass band parades, Mardi Gras celebrations, and swinging small groups. A native of the Texas–Louisiana Gulf Coast, Pierce has performed across the United States and internationally, captivating audiences with his soulful tone and commanding improvisation.

As a versatile performer, he has shared the stage with The Temptations, Arturo Sandoval, Randy Brecker, Bob Mintzer, Doc Severinsen, The O’Jays, Wayne Newton, The Glenn Miller Orchestra, and The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. He has toured Romania with the McNeese State University Jazz Ensemble and recorded with the GRAMMY-nominated University of North Texas One O’Clock Lab Band, appearing as lead alto on Lab 2012.

For over sixteen years, Pierce has led the Justin Pierce Jazz Group, a flexible ensemble performing contemporary jazz, brass band repertoire, and standards. The group has been featured at the Charlie Christian Jazz Festival, the Sherman Jazz Festival, and the Granbury Jazz Festival, and is a fixture at major events throughout DFW. His debut album is currently in post-production.

In 2022, Pierce was inducted into the Vidor, Texas Walk of Fame, joining the ranks of George Jones, Tracy Byrd, Clay Walker, and Donice Morace, alongside his former mentor Don Rollins—a saxophonist and jazz musician to Pierce, but best known to the wider world as the GRAMMY-winning songwriter of “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere.”

Pierce is also a family man: his wife Ashley, a vocalist, performs regularly with his band, while his five children are growing musicians themselves—his sons on bass, his daughters on violin, and all studying piano. Their shared musicianship reflects the deep-rooted family tradition that continues to shape his artistry.

A Conn-Selmer Performing Artist and Vandoren Artist-Clinician, Justin Pierce bridges tradition, innovation, and soul in every performance.

My Jazz Story

The first jazz record I bought was Kind of Blue, by Miles Davis. My junior high band director recommended it to me, and I don't know if he could have picked an album more appropriate: Miles Davis, an all-star rhythm section, and two of the most important jazz saxophonists of all time (John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley). Wonderful music that touches the soul.
