Jack was turned on to jazz by a mixture of Stan Getz, Lee Konitz and Earl Bostic.
My journey through jazz has been determined by seeing the Kenton band with Konitz, Sims, Russo and Rosolino. The sixties Ellington band with Clark Terry, Quentin Jackson and the wonderful saxophone section was a turning point. Coltrane and Dolphy in Walthamstow was frightening. Miles and the great quintet at Hammersmith in 1967 was a revelation. A constant parade through London has challenged us with Cecil Taylor, George Russell, Gil Evans, Martial Solal, Sonny Rollins, Stan Getz, Ornette and Carla Bley.
The home grown UK players such as Julian Siegal, John Surman, Stan Tracey, Tubby Hayes, Tony Kofi, Mike Gibbs produce music that goes well beyond their nationality.
