My Jazz Story

About Erroll Garner "You can never confuse him with anyone. You don't need to compare him with anyone. Because he is Erroll Garner!" (Gregory Golub) Samara Joy. She is a very talented jazz singer, and as it turned out, a very charming and friendly young woman, completely not spoiled by the fame that suddenly fell on her. (Here I am a little cunning. Without a doubt, professionals in recent years have carefully kept an eye on her ascent to the musical Olympus). Of course, this is Samara Joy, the winner of 2 awards at the last Grammy: Grammy Award for Best New Artist and Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album. In 2019 junior Samara McLendon (Joy) from Bronx won the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, which was the starting point of her tumultuous career. I was lucky to see, and most importantly to listen to her, (and even talk a little with her) at the jazz festival in Molde, in Norway, where she had a solo concert on July 18 of this year. Samara Joy has demonstrated all the bright palette of her voice, either languidly enveloping in the lower register, or rapidly climbing up - from velvet contralto to soprano. She is still looking for herself in improvisation, but she will definitely find her unique place. Samara manages the audience pretty well, although she still learns how to do it. (I understand her very well, knowing how difficult it is). I compared her vocal and her still not fully formed style of singing (she is so young yet) with other masters of jazz singing, trying to find similarities, and as a result I came to the conclusion that she is similar to herself, which is especially great! She is only 23. She is still studying to become a real jazz diva in the future, like famous jazz singers whom she had looked up to in her early youth - Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald. And she has all the prerequisites for this purpose. And most importantly, she is ready to stubbornly seek herself to become "that special", but different. And I'm sure that she will succeed. Good luck Samara Joy! May as many of the brightest stars as possible light up for you on that hectic, insanely exciting life path that every great artist must go through. You're cool! You are Samara Joy. Gregory Golub - composer, jazz pianist Molde Jazz Festival, Norway July,18 2023
