About Me

Dave Moss, is an electric and double bassist, and avid explorer of sound. Moss had lived in New York City for nearly 13 years and relocated to Kyoto, Japan in December of 2015. During his time in New York City, he had performed and collaborated with Eric McPherson, Daniel Carter, Charnette Moffett, Demian Richardson, Aaron Scott, Salim Washington, Kenny Wessel, Ferenc Nemeth, John Blum, and Charles Gayle. Several groups included: WAKE UP!, SEARCH, The Missing Ones and Platypus Revenge. Perhaps one of the biggest moments for Moss, was meeting his long-time hero, Ornette Coleman. This introduction had led to regular, deeply transformational meetings and sessions, every few months, for over 8 years.

Originally, Dave Moss is from the San Francisco Bay Area, California. Prior to moving to New York City, he played with numerous Jazz musicians in Oakland, CA., which included many crucial jam sessions at a club called, “The Bird Cage”. Simultaneously, he studied and performed with free music musicians such as: William Parker and Jameel Moondoc. This lead to concerts at The Stone and The Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural Center.

At present, Moss devotes his time to exploring improvisation, composing, and playing shows and festivals, nationally and internationally. Some of those festivals have included: The Charlie Parker Festival, The Care Fusion Festival of New York, The FONT festival, The HOWL Festival of New York, The Vision Festival, The Siamese 3012 Thai Festival for the Arts, The IAJE Jazz Conference, The Bridgeport Jazz Festival, and The New Rochelle Jazz Festival.

PRESS:

“The elastic but forceful rhythms laid out by bassist David Moss—a key figure in the circle of musicians in the 577 Records stable, prevent the music from sounding old fashioned, eschewing bop buoyancy for a more muscular grooveology.”– Downbeat Magazine, Special 2010 Winter Edition, album release review for the band: SEARCH.

“Fluently applying reverberant pizzicato form, Moss bridges the delivery from one horn to the other, carves out introductions on which the instruments can depend (“Breathe”) and operates as hinge to each instrument’s sound”–All About Jazz Magazine album release review for the band: SEARCH, summer 2009.

“WAKE UP! is a genuine band (rare these days), but even more than a band, it’s a movement for increasing consciousness–a movement primarily interested in evoking the evolution of consciousness in us all, through SOUND and beyond. The members of WAKE UP! all knew each other from previous music collaborations, but it wasn’t until May, 2009 that Federico Ughi, Demian Richardson, David Moss and Daniel Carter started getting together regularly as a quartet, which eventually became WAKE UP! Musically, the band demonstrates a huge spectrum of influences, and integrates and synthesizes an array of styles, while not being limited or stuck in any one style or genre. “With a debut self-titled album (out now), WAKE UP! are riding a wave of youthful enthusiasm every bit as boisterous and impatient as their name.”– Daniel Spicer, WIRE magazine article.”
