DARIA
DARIA, an innovative singer and songwriter with a beautiful voice, unerring pitch and wide vocal range, blends Jazz, Brazilian music, Afro Cuban and world rhythms to create her own powerful and expressive style.
About Me
“It's a voice that utterly captivated me the first time I heard it. No matter what she was singing, embracing the
balladry of Great American Songbook standards, romping through familiar pop tunes, swinging jazz riffs, dipping
into the roots of the blues and beyond. And it was vividly apparent, even in her early albums, that Daria was (and
is) a singer with the talent to place her in the upper levels of the jazz vocal art.”
– Don Heckman, The International Review of Music
She sings with unself-conscious abandon, showcasing her extraordinary range, breaking through the constraints
of the conventional, fearlessly reinventing tunes and melodies.
– Paul Liberatore, Marin Independent Journal

Growing up in San Francisco, Daria was part of a uniquely creative family. Her mother, a published author, spoke
five languages, taught creative writing at SFSU and the Fromm Institute. Her father was a first violinist with the
San Francisco Symphony. Daria began to sing and study piano at age six. In her teens she fell in love with Jazz and
Pop and then went on to study classical singing but soon found herself on another path and became passionate
about Jazz and Brazilian music. She studied with many wonderful teachers, most notably Bobby McFerrin, Mark
Murphy and Brazilian musician, Celia Malheiros. Over the years, Daria has honed her skills on the bandstand,
delighting audiences with her unique style, improvisations and versatility.
Daria has 2 critically acclaimed CDs on her label, Jazz ‘m Up Records. Just the Beginning, produced by Ian Dogole
and Feel The Rhythm, produced by Frank Martin and seven-time Grammy Nominee, Wayne Wallace. The title track,
“Feel The Rhythm,” a beautiful Brazilian style song, received Honorable Mention at the Billboard World Music
Competition. Her her most recent CD, Strawberry Fields Forever, Songs by the Beatles, was released on award-
winning Origin/OA2 Records.
“Daria successfully reinvents 10 Lennon-McCartney standards for the jazz idiom. Daria’s phrasing throughout the
album is marked by unusual hesitations that give a new perspective to the lyrics. When she purrs, ‘You can knit a
sweater by the fireside,’ she makes it sound like a sensual delight.”
– DownBeat
