Art Rosch

Art first loved jazz as a third grader, which made him the youngest hipster in the world.

About Me

Jazz was a passion from childhood. I grew up in the sixties and was buying records by Coltrane, Roland Kirk, Cannonball Adderly, Eric Dolphy, all the music from Duke and Basie to Albert Ayler. Everyone thought I was nuts. I'd go to a party and take the Beatles off the turntable and put on Trane's Meditations. Needless to say, I was not popular. At sixteen I left home with the goal of finding my hero Ornette Coleman and becoming his disciple. I actually found and befriended him but I was too young to comprehend the musical and social milieu that I'd invaded. I moved to Detroit to attend school but spent all my time practicing drums. I became house drummer for The Artist's Workshop. In this fashion I “wasted” my youth. I moved to San Francisco in '69 and played mostly in bands of my own devising. I got into keyboard and songwriting, thus adding another element to my musical persona. Eventually, writing took over my creative world. I'd sustained an injury that made gigging difficult. I also got into photography and have been writing for Shutterbug Magazine since '04. I make my living as a freelance everything.
