Universal Disappointment is acclaimed Danish composer/pianist Jeppe Zeeberg's fifth album released in his own name. After his 2018 solo album Eight Seemingly Unrelated Pieces of Piano Music, Zeeberg is returning to the orchestral format that characterized his earlier albums. Almost every track on the album has different instrumental constellations, the only kind of consistent being Zeeberg's permanent group The Absolute Pinnacle of Human Achievement (with Henrik Olsson, Casper Nyvang Rask and Anders Vestergaard) who plays on several tracks throughout the album. With an absolute disregard for genre conventions, Zeeberg not just works with various instrumental constellations; his music changes drastically in style and mood from one moment to the next. In his own words: "A lot of music sounds like it does because "that's just how it sounds in this particular genre". My music sounds like I sound. People often think my music sounds like it's made of samples from different musical styles, like it consists of quotes. But really the music on this album is the most sincere I have ever done, there's nothing conceptual about it. I wrote everything right from the heart. My earlier albums have dealt with specific themes like time and travel, trying to describe specific things through music. In my view, this narrative approach is still present in this new album, as if the listener is being told a story, only this time it's more abstract. I'm not sure exactly what this album is about, but I worked hard on telling the story right. And I think that somehow this makes the album even more sincere." Unlike much of today's music, Universal Disappointment is not meant to put the listener in one particular mood or to create a certain atmosphere. It is meant to tell a story - however abstract that story might be.
