L’abîme (The Abysm) is the first album of a new quintet of the same name. Conceived over the past two years, it will be released in April of 2021 on Montreal based label Multiple Chord Music, in both physical (vinyl + cd) and digital form. The album unveils a dreamlike universe, a cinematic adventure suspended in time, like a dive through the abysm. The group displays a unique sound rooted in modern jazz with a strong rock and contemporary classical (Messiaen) influences. Forged by the writing of Jonathan Turgeon (piano) and the lavish arrangements by the group, the project features many different woodwinds and is an exploration on textures. Faithful to its jazz heritage, L’abîme expresses itself through deep and engaging improvisation sections channeled by Hugo Blouin (upright bass), Jean-Philippe Godbout (drums), Alex Dodier (saxophones, flute) and Gabriel Genest (tenor saxophone, clarinets). The L’abîme band emerges from the Jonathan Turgeon Trio, which has been active and well received in Quebec for the last ten years. Recipient of the Stingray Rising Star Award at the 2018 Montreal International Jazz Festival (composition of the year), it has been described as “a truly outstanding group” (Stanley Péan, ICI Musique), and its leader “one of the most brilliant pianists of its generation” (Christophe Rodriguez, sortiesjazznights.com). The trio released two albums : Au fil des feuilles qui craquent (2015) et Les rêves errants (2017), the latter receiving two nominations for Jazz Album of the Year awards. The prolific members of L’abîme thrive in other jazz projects such as Charbonneau ou les valeurs à’ bonne place which includes Blouin, Dodier, Godbout and Turgeon, and won the 2019 OPUS Award for Jazz Concert of the Year and the 2018 GAMIQ Award for Jazz Album of the Year. Also of note is Alex Dodier’s work with Shpik, who won the 2018 TD Grand Jazz Award at the Montreal International Jazz Festival.
