Dmitry Ermakov

Dmitry Ermakov, a Russian-born British composer/keyboard player.

About Me

Dmitry Ermakov (born St. Petersburg, Russia, 1967) took to the piano at the tender age of 5, and joined St. Petersburg’s - then Leningrad – prestigious Choir College of M.I. Glinka at State Academy Capella the following year. His schooling at the Capella gave him a firm foundation in the study of harmony, composition, conducting, and musical history as well as providing him with a rigorous piano regime – under the guidance of A. F. Kurnavin, he would often practise 8 hours a day before a concert or exam.

But Dmitry was also drawn to ‘extra-curricular’ Western music – rock, heavy metal, jazz etc. – a passion which earned him a stern reprimand from his school teachers who chastised him for “breaking the piano by playing that uncouth music.” Actually, the young Ermakov was just practising Boney M “Gotta Go Home” in a free period. He and some mates would huddle round to listen to Seva Novgorodtsev’s forbidden ‘Rock-Posevy’ rock broadcast on BBC Russian Service and soon formed a rock band inspired by greats such as the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath etc. Ermakov also joined a piano duo playing their own original music inspired by the likes of the French electronic group Space. [Space. Concert in Moscow, 1989: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GE-aBx7CDRM]

These illicit tendencies were clandestinely encouraged by Ermakov’s conducting teacher, E. E. Lopatina, who would come back from visiting her sister in Paris wearing outrageous hats and risqué stockings. Before school broke up for the summer, she would call her students and ask: ‘So, my little boys, what shall I bring you from France?’ And her ‘little boys’ would pipe up with a list of the latest hard rock and heavy metal releases such AC/DC’s ‘Back in Black.’

By 1983 it was clearly time for Ermakov to spread his wings, so he moved on to study at the Jazz Faculty of the M.P. Mussorgsky College of Music, Leningrad, where he took up the sax with Gennady Goldstein and also studied improvisation. During this period he dived into jazz-rock fusion, soaking up the riffs, grooves and solos from records by Miles Davies, Weather Report, Frank Zappa, Carlos Santana, Art Noise of Chicago, Chicago, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Stanley Clark and so on.

After a brief spell in 1987 with White Nights [Белые Ночи], an official VIA [Vocal Instrumental Ensemble] of the State Artist Management Company Lenconcert, throughout the late 80’s, Ermakov played with several bands in the Soviet underground scene, contributing lyrics, vocals and sax as well as keyboard and composition. Bands include the punk jazz-rock group Panika [ПАNIКА], the avant-garde jazz-fusion group Fox-Box and the innovative 8-piece fusion band Komnata 118. In September 1989 the underground rock star Yury Morozov formed a new band, “The Y. Morozov OGPU” [OGPU = ‘unified management of the state’, taking a poke at soviet officialdom] with Ermakov on keyboards and Viktor Mikheyev on bass and vocals (for full line-up see Discography below). As the Soviet Union was in its death throes, they débuted at the ground-breaking rock festival, the so-called “First Festival of the Aurora Journal” which ran for nine days in September 1989, then went on to tour the country. [”The Y. Morozov OGPU” at Festival “Aurora”, 1989: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gvrKrQbB7c About the festival (in Russian): http://ww.macca.ru/item.php?id=698]. As well as recording several soundtracks for Lenfilm Film Studios, Ermakov worked as Director of Music Band at Toxovo Cultural Centre.

Although any kind of music not sanctioned by the Soviet State, especially rock and avant-garde underground music, was heavily frowned upon and police raids could have resulted in arrests and detentions, Ermakov nevertheless recorded a number of contraband cassette albums including: Panika’s ‘Reshuffle’ (Перепланировка, 1988; for info and line-up see Discography below); Fox-Box’s ‘O, Laziness’ [О’лень, see Discography]; Komnata 118’s ‘Komnata 118’ (Room 118, 1989, see Discography below). Ermakov also played acoustic Yamaha grand piano on Y. Morozov’s official vinyl LP albums Смутные Дни [Troubled Days] and Красная Тревога [Red Alarm], recorded clandestinely at night in the State Capella concert hall, to which Morozov had access thanks to his ‘official’ day job as a sound engineer for the ‘one and only’ state music label Melodia. But with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Ermakov lost his job, his band Komnata 118 fell apart and the creative atmosphere of the underground scene was shattered as Perestroika got underway and alternative artists scrambled to earn a living. Before leaving for Britain in 1993, Ermakov composed, played and recorded the entire soundtrack for the renowned Russian clown troupe Licedei Minus 4 (whom he had first met at a set at The A. I. Raikin Theatre Estrada in Leningrad in 1987 while working for the VIA White Nights) as they took their show Creation Myth on tour in Europe. Ermakov was also working at Studio D2 [D-Квадрат Студия] composing tracks for TV adverts.

Once in the West, music took a back seat, although Ermakov continued to compose, play and record pieces at home in both the UK and Italy, occasionally gigging and recording with various musicians, too. In this period Ermakov authored and published an 800+ page monograph Bo and Bon (comparative study of Tibetan Bon and Siberian shamanic spiritual traditions: http://www.boandbon.com/), joined the post-graduate Tibetan language course led by Prof. Charles Ramble at Oxford University, produced and published three other books on the Bon religion (http://www.yungdrungbon.co.uk/Publications.html), read lectures and gave presentations at Oxford, SOAS (London), Vilnius, Kaunas and Cagliari Universities.

In 2011, late night internet surfing led to a  chance reunion with his friend and bass guitarist, Viktor Mikheyev, and this led to a new creative collaboration, Spatial Kode. In 2012, Ermakov spent an intense month playing and composing with Mikheyev in St. Petersburg, meeting up again on the Black Sea in Bulgaria the following summer. A total of five pieces had been mixed by December 2013 when Mikheyev unexpectedly checked out due to the worsening political situation in Russia coupled with family reasons. Ermakov changed track, focussing solely on pieces he himself had composed and going on to mix a full album with sound engineer Eduardo Lopez at Loft Music Studios, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The new project was named MetaQuorum.

MetaQuorum’s debut album, Midnight Sun, contains ten tracks (Total time: 56:16) and is a journey through progressive fusion they call Meld, an organic blend of jazz, funk, rock, reggae, baroque, electronica and more, with a cool, foot-tapping swing which makes the room buzz. The complex polyphony, riffs, quirky piano and synth solos, upbeat drums and occasional roaring guitar reflect Ermakov’s joie de vivre as well as his influences, which include: Miles Davies, Marcus Miller, Herbie Hancock, George Duke, Oscar Peterson, Weather Report, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Peter Gabriel, Kraftwerk, Yello, King Crimson, Chicago, Vivaldi, Frescobaldi, Mozart and Rachmaninoff.

City Folk is a lilting Folk/Prog/World Beat Fusion track inspired by the pulse of urban life.

A soundscape recorded right in the heart of Newcastle-upon-Tyne merges with the opening bars of melodic sequences composed in Barnes, London, and laid over punchy shuffle drums and oriental percussion opening out into rock organ harmonies...

Band: MetaQuorum. Album: MIGRATION (Studio) [Single] Released: 28/05/2016. Label: Unsigned.

Migration is our first song, the lyrics call us to wake from our endless roaming and find direction in life.

A progressive track with an epic sound, sub bass and bass evoke the echoing expanse of the solar system while the insistent dance-trance rhythm on drums, guitar, slap key-bass and sequencers provide a sense of relentless movement, our transmigration through time and space.

An array of effects enhance this cosmic feel, culminating with the soulful sax (actually sound-engineered from Japanese kokyū) which beams out across the galactic winds.

LYRICS:

Migration… Temptation to move on the surface of the Earth, in the waves between the worlds

Migration… Elevator to the stars reflects galaxies dance, nebulas moving past fast

Migration… Star dust on the shoes, silicon soles on the move echo in the empty tube

Migration… Mind games unfold on the screen of the perceptual realm filled with the ants’ scream

Migration… Existence - running in loops, population of the virtual realms distracted from the moment of truth

Migration… There’ll come a moment at last when you break through the deadly impasse, when the wheels of migration collapse.
