Bill Muter
Avant-garde tuba player currently based out of Tokyo
About Me
Bill is an active performer, author, clinician and arts advocate. With a performance
background as diverse as his audience, Bill maintains a schedule of over two hundred
public performances a year in venues across North America, South Korea, Japan, Haiti and
more. Bill is the author of A Practical Approach Brass Pedagogy Book. In the month of its
release, A Practical Approach was one of the bestselling books on Apple's iBookstore Music
Book Charts, topping the Beatles Songbook and the popular Real Book. A Practical
Approach has also been fully translated into Japanese. In 2012, Bill toured to all 47
prefectures in Japan promoting his book with Blast, Kyodo Tokyo and BrassTribe Magazine.
Along with A Practical Approach, Bill is also a contributing author of pedagogy materials to
the International Tuba-Euphonium Association and has presented as a clinician and soloist
at the ITEA Midwest Conference. Bill's works have also been featured in Brass Musician
Magazine, The New Times and Poland's Brasserwis Magazine.
Bill's debut solo album Off Script has labeled him a new driving force in the avant-garde
and experimental music scene. Muter is the most innovative tuba player we have seen. He
has the potential to do for the tuba what Louis Armstrong did to the trumpet - New
Times.
Bill is also involved in the pageantry arts. For five years, Bill toured with the Tony and
Emmy Award winning Broadway Show Blast as a tuba soloist, yellow tutu guy and
percussionist. Bill is highly sought after marching band clinician and has worked with
numerous organizations including the Boston Crusaders and Crossmen Drum and Bugle
Corps.
