A photo of big band leader, composer, and pianist, Allan H. Nurse, who immigrated from Barbados in the early 1920s. As a jazz artist, writing for and leading The Blackamoors and the Allan Nurse Orchestra, and the Allan Nurse Calypso Band; recording for Decca and Southern Records in the 1930s and 40s, he pioneered the use of Calypso rhythms in jazz, and r&b.
