CD: Rufus Reid
Source:
Rifftides by Doug Ramsey
Rufus Reid, Out Front (Motéma). Passionate performances of compositions by its members highlight this album by the stalwart bassist's new trio. Reid's “Caress the Thought" evolves through changing atmospheres and rhythms into a crescendo and a peaceful resolution. Drummer Duduka Da Fonseca's “Doña Maria" alternates between the samba tradition of his native Brazil and the mainstream jazz of his adopted country. Pianist Steve Allee drew on twelve-tone music in “The Rise of the Row," but the mood of the piece ...

CD: Chet Baker
Source:
Rifftides by Doug Ramsey
Chet Baker, The Sesjun Radio Shows (T2). The trumpeter and singer soars in two CDs compiled from 1970s and '80s concerts on the Dutch radio program Tros Sesjun. Baker's fleetness, lyricism, hard swing and vocal improvisations put this among the best work of his later years. Of the sidemen, pianists Harold Danko and Phil Markowitz, bassist Cameron Brown and drummer John Engels make outstanding contributions. Sound quality is superb. There are five stunning 1985 tracks by Baker with guitarist Philip ...

Paquito D'Rivera's "Panamericana Suite" (MCG Jazz) Available Now!
Source:
Michael Ricci
Few jazz artists have been as musically omnivorous—and dazzlingly accomplished—as the Cuban-born alto saxophone and clarinet virtuoso Paquito D'Rivera. Equally at home performing bebop, tango, and classical as well as Afro-Cuban styles, D'Rivera displays his mastery of many genres on his new CD, Panamericana Suite. Recorded live at Pittsburgh's Manchester Craftsmen's Guild for MCG Jazz, Panamericana Suite takes its name from a piece commissioned by Jazz at Lincoln Center that D'Rivera premiered in 2000. A stunning cultural synthesis encompassing North, ...

Joe McPhee and Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten - Blue Chicago Blues (Not Two, 2010)
Source:
Music and More by Tim Niland
Joe McPhee has played with a number of European improvisers during his long and distinguished career, and the rapport he strikes with bassist Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten is immediate and compelling. McPhee plays alto saxophone while Haker-Flaten plays both bowed and plucked bass. The range of sounds and textures that that are able to get some such few raw materials is very impressive, such as on “Cerulean Mood Swing" where McPhee's anguished Albert Ayler inspired saxophone cries out against the solidity of ...

Introducing "From the Stacks": Pico's 2010 Stacks, Volume 1
Source:
Something Else!
By Pico There's a shelf right above my computer monitor where I place all the new release CD's I intend to review. Over the course of the year, that batch has grown and as I type this, the shelf has 115 CD's on it. With less than two months left in 2010, that doesn't leave a lot of time left to tell everyone about them before taking a look back at the best releases of these twelve months. Yes, we ...

Cassandra Wilson - Silver Pony (2010)
Source:
Something Else!
By Nick Deriso Cassandra Wilson, who consistently defies convention as this restless chanteuse, doesn't disappoint with Silver Pony—issued today on Blue Note as the long-awaited part-in studio, part-live followup to her celebrated Loverly. She has the vocal phrasing, the dusky intellect, of Charlie Parker and the elastic intuition of Betty Carter. Yet, Wilson is no throwback. She writes her own music, and surrounds herself with top-shelf improvisers. Even when including songs from the canon—here, that includes “Lover Come Back to ...
