Bruce Springsteen: The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town (2010)
Source:
Something Else!
By Mark Saleski It is perhaps too easy to dismiss the work of celebrities. In the case of Bruce Springsteen, there has been much vitriol expressed over his “supposed" blue collar leanings, as if success can (no...must) wipe out your roots. If you look back at this documentary on the making of Darkness on the Edge of Town, you can see that Springsteen is in many ways reacting to his own fame, wondering what exactly it's all about, and trying ...

Destination out Asks Important Questions
Source:
Music and More by Tim Niland
Destination Out strikes again with an excellent post featuring tracks from the obscure Cecil Taylor album Fly Fly Fly! Fly Fly! They contend that this is one of Taylor's albums that could best introduce new listeners to his occasionally daunting work. “We know countless avant jazz newbies who wanted to explore Cecil Taylor and inevitably picked up Unit Structures. It was on Blue Note, so it had to be fairly tame, right? Cue panic and stricken looks. Unit Structures is ...

From the Stacks: Pico's 2010 Stacks, Volume 4
Source:
Something Else!
By Pico Here's another half dozen batch of jazz wholesomeness brought to us by both emerging and established artists, from the mainstream to the insane-stream. Half of these are pianoless trios but with entirely different lead instruments, which seems to be a trend among the more adventurous musicians, and these guys can flat out cut it. The Stacks continue to slowly dwindle down as more new releases get their due... Avishai Cohen Introducing Triveni: Avishai Cohen, the trumpet player, was ...

Bruce Springsteen: The Promise: Darkness on the Edge of Town Remastered (1978)
Source:
Something Else!
By Mark Saleski This world of digital sound can be quite tricky. The original line about CDs was that they would provide “perfect sound forever." Yeah, sure. In their haste to get product to market, the early mastering jobs produced less than stellar results. In the intervening years, we've learned a lot about this process, although the “loudness wars" have stepped in to muddy the waters. That's why I often cringe when seeing the word “remaster" next to an album ...

Bruce Springsteen: The Promise: The Lost Sessions (2010)
Source:
Something Else!
By Mark Saleski To call this group of songs “The Lost Sessions" is to put a slightly misleading spin on things. We all know the story, the one of the huge volume of music that Bruce wrote post-Born To Run with some songs ending up on Darkness On The Edge Of Town, some on The River, and most of the rest taking a long vacation on the shelf. It's a testament to Springsteen's writing talents that he was able to ...
