AudioMoxie is pleased to announce the release of simple structures, the new album by Portland composer and multi-instrumentalist, Dave White. The Best of 2010, Part 2: Blues 'N' Roots

The Best of 2010, Part 2: Blues 'N' Roots

Source: Something Else!

Nobody plays it like Buddy, as his Living Proof testifies. By Pico This part of the Year End series is typically the shortest, and not because there's less excellent blues and roots records than other kinds of music, but because I regrettably have little time leftover to delve into these idioms as much as I'd like to after soaking in all the jazzy stuff. Luckily, Mark and Nick have been taking up the slack quite well, as you will soon ...

Christmas CDs: Matt Wilson, Matassa/Anderson

Christmas CDs: Matt Wilson, Matassa/Anderson

Source: Rifftides by Doug Ramsey

The other day a man who acted on last year's Rifftides recommendation of Carla Bley's Carla's Christmas Carols let me know that he was disappointed in the album. Indeed, he was offended by it. In the review, I described the “tenderness, wit, harmonic brilliance, wide dynamic range and wry sense of nostalgia" in Bley's arrangements of traditional holiday songs. My friend said that he likes his Christmas songs straight, without “all those minors." I refrained from a discussion of the ...

New York—With a career spanning nearly two decades, the band of minstrels has gained cross over success all over the world with its new genre of “Ren and Rock" music. The lyrics, written by award winning Singer/Songwriter Candice Night, are inspired by nature and the myths and fairy tales they encounter on their international travels. The melodies, composed and arranged by Grammy nominated Ritchie Blackmore, encompass musical structure and the essence of melodies from the early 1600s. And then they ...

Buddy Guy - The Definitive Buddy Guy (Shout Factory, 2009)

Source: Music and More by Tim Niland

Blues guitarist and vocalist Buddy Guy has become an iconic figure on the modern blues scene, after many years in the trenches, he has received a level of success few blues musicians have achieved. While it is impossible for a one disc compilation to encapsulate a career that has lasted for over fifty years, this collection does a fine job of demonstrating the facets that make up Guy the musician. There are selections from his lengthy partnership with the harmonica ...

Mitch Seidman, with Claire Arenius and Jamie Macdonald - Triangulation (2010)

Mitch Seidman, with Claire Arenius and Jamie Macdonald - Triangulation (2010)

Source: Something Else!

By Nick DeRiso On Triangulation, Boston-based guitarist Mitch Seidman has complete command of both the bebop R&B fission and the gentlemanly poise of early idol Kenny Burrell. That means tunes of lyrical strength and technical skill, linked by this remarkable ability to blend seamlessly with his fellow musicians across a varied soundscape. For all its congeniality, though, Triangulation is marked by a pleasing unwillingness to fall into mimicry. Unlike so many, Seidman and Co. haven't let their deep appreciation for ...
