Corinne Bailey Rae - The Love EP (2011)

Corinne Bailey Rae - The Love EP (2011)

Source: Something Else!

By Nick DeRiso Corinne Bailey Rae isn't the same singer, maybe isn't even the same person, that she was at the time of her celebrated 2007 debut. Three Grammy nominations, including one for best new artist, couldn't shield her from this world's knifing truths: Her husband, 31-year-old saxophonist Jason Rae, would be dead of an overdose just a year later. But whereas Bailey Rae's most recent longplayer, The Sea, was framed as a catharsis in the wake of that shattering ...

John Williams or John Williams?

Source: Rifftides by Doug Ramsey

After several people hopped on the web with corrections, Mosaic commander-in-chief Michael Cuscuna explained, “Earlier version of the write-up got pasted in by mistake." Mosaic ...

Lee Morgan - The Sidewinder (Blue Note, 1964)

Lee Morgan - The Sidewinder (Blue Note, 1964)

Source: Music and More by Tim Niland

Like a hothouse orchid, trumpeter Lee Morgan reveled in the competitive Philadelphia jazz scene of the 1940's and 50's developing a prodigious talent that saw him hitting the road professionally at a mere eighteen years of age. Morgan's career had some down points and an undeniably tragic end, but when he was on and in sympathetic company he stood shoulder to shoulder with Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Booker Little and the rest of the trumpeters that were evolving out of ...

Nathaniel Smith - Nathaniel Smith Quartet (2010)

Source: Something Else!

Though Smith later got to work with luminaries like ...

One Track Mind: Mavis Staples, "Last Train" (2010)

Source: Something Else!

By Nick DeRiso Over the course of a remarkable career, both with her family band the Staple Singers and as a solo artist, gospel-soul icon Mavis Staples has bravely explored the frustrations, sorrows and then joys of the African-American freedom fight. But, lest we forget, she can still rock it. “Last Train," from Staples' most recent album, proves the point. The song (originally the opener on Allen Toussaint's signature 1975 recording Southern Nights) is part of a diverse mixture of ...
