Blaise Siwula, Solo Tenor Sax, "Live in London"
Source:
Gapplegate Music Review by Grego Edwards
How many solo saxophone records have I heard? A good many. Are they all wonderful? No. If the player is not imspired or comes to the date unprepared, it can be slow going for the listener. Happily that is not the case with Blaise Siwula's Live in London (No Frills Music 001). It's from two separate live appearances in 2008. He switches to clarinet on one track and Alan Wilkinson joins him on the baritone for the final number. What ...

Derek and the Dominoes - Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs (Deluxe Edition) (Polydor 1970, 2011)
Source:
Music and More by Tim Niland
This staple of classic rock radio has been around so long it's hard to believe that it is just reaching its fortieth birthday. Rolled out once again in a nice double disc package, complete with nice liners and photographs, this may not be the definitive version of this evergreen, but it will certainly foot the bill for all but the most diehard fan. Eric Clapton's legendary reticence to assume the leadership position in a solo career and his unrequited love ...

Darius Jones and Matthew Shipp - Cosmic Lieder (2011)
Source:
Something Else!
By S. Victor Aaron Going from unknown two years ago to co-leading a duet record with Matthew Shipp is a meteoric rise in the avant jazz world, much less any world, but that's just what alto saxophonist has accomplished in this short time frame. In the fall of 2009, Jones released his debut album, the critically praised Man'Ish Boy. I managed to miss out on that one, but stumbled upon him on two occasions last year when examining new releases ...

Free Fall - Gray Scale (SMJZ, 2010) ****a1/2
Source:
Free Jazz by Stef Gijssels
By Paul Acquaro Free Fall is a trio of Ken Vandermark, Havard Wiik, and Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on clarinets, piano and bass respectively. The trio, apparently modeled after the early 1960s Jimmy Giuffre's Trio with Paul Bley and Gary Peacock, has delivered a challenging and sophisticated effort that reveals itself more with each listen. The albums cover, a stark grey scale image of a pier stretching into the water is iconic for the music within. The depth and interconnectedness of ...

Jon Eardley and Phil Woods: Pot Pie
Source:
JazzWax by Marc Myers
Jazz was so crowded with talent in the 1950s that it's easy for great artists from the decade to slip into obscurity today. This is especially true of trumpet players. We fixate on Miles Davis, Chet Baker, Kenny Dorham and Clifford Brown, not to mention Dizzy Gillespie, Harry “Sweets" Edison and Roy Eldridge. Rightfully so, but there were plenty of others. One who deserves much more recognition than he has received thus far is Jon Eardley. Among his finest recording ...

Isaac Byrd, Jr. & Tribe Judah deliver soulful depth and evocative tunefulness on new CD "Beginnings"
Source:
Lauren Rogers
His new album with Tribe Judah may be called Beginnings, but trumpet player Isaac Byrd, Jr. certainly doesn't sound like a beginner. The soulful depth and evocative tunefulness of the record leaves the fingerprints of an established, boldly confident musician, one who knows quite well how to express his innermost emotions through his instrument. While many instrumental albums are merely exercises in technical expertise, Beginnings is a collection of moods. Byrd is a storyteller without words, conjuring vivid imagery through ...
