Get ready for 3 days of swinging jazz music
A contemporary master jazz harpist will team up with a traditional instrumentalist as part of what promises to be an enthralling experience this weekend at the El Paso International Wine & Jazz Festival.
Michael O, a jazz musician who plays the harp, is looking forward to the event at the new Grace Gardens in the Upper Valley.
The El Paso Friends of Jazz Society sponsors the festival, which features a combination of big-name and local artists as well as art exhibits, food and, of course, wine.
“I started three festivals (elsewhere), and I like to come to first-year events because you get to see all the players who are in it," said Michael O (O'Shiver), in a telephone interview from Kansas City, Mo. “It sounds like the venue is lovely. This will be my first time to El Paso."
Fellow musician Richie Cole, who plays the saxophone and lives in the Chicago area, has performed in El Paso before and is acquainted with several of the city's jazz musicians.
“It sounds like a very exciting venue," said Cole, who plans to play several original songs plus several jazz standards that emphasize the swing style. “One of the previous times I was in El Paso, I had a bunch of kids dancing and singing on the stage when all of a sudden we had thunder and lightning. Everyone panicked. That's my memory of it."
Fans can expect to see musicians Brad Leali, Sean Jones and Dave Pietro. Latino Fuego and Azucar, groups that specialize in salsa music, are also scheduled to perform at the festival.
