Codarts Summerschool Jazz Around the World 2007 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands

This year the summer school organized by Codarts from 7 - 15 July 2007, will, besides its intense jazz education, have a heavy accent on the wonderful music from Brazil. It's going to be an exciting 2nd edition!

The whole cycle consists of 9 days of full immersion into the exciting city of Rotterdam. Education, playing, concerts, the largest Jazz festival in Europe...it's all part of the package! And it's still possible to apply!

Teachers:
Rick Margitza (United States) - saxophone
Gerard Presencer (Great Britain) - trumpet
Philip Catherine (Belgium) - guitar
Dena DeRose (United States) - vocals
Carlos Werneck (Brazil) - el. bass
Harold Danko (United States) - piano
Cyro Baptista (Brazil) - percussion
Hein Van de Geyn (the Netherlands) - double bass
Billy Hart (Verenigde Staten) - drums
Andre Ceccarelli (Frankrijk) - drums

All teachers and students will arrive somewhere in the afternoon of July 6. In the evening there will be a dinner and the teachers will give an informal concert. There also will be a performance by the students of our brother-summer school: 'Roots and Routes'.

Between July 7 and July 12, 2007, some fifty-five selected students will work intensively with the 9 teachers for six days in the well equipped building of Codarts, the conservatory of Rotterdam. After a few days of working hard and the formation of the bands, the student bands will branch out into the city of Rotterdam. Double-concerts will take place in 4 venues, all within walking distance of the school. We will end the teaching part of the project with a small festival in the recently renovated World Music and Dance Centre (WMDC) building in Delfshaven where all student bands will perform.

After the six educational days there are three more festival days. The world renowned Northsea Jazz Festival will open its doors and all our students will receive a free 3-day pass for the festival. During the festivals the student bands will perform around the city during the lunch hours. During these days there will be several master classes by members of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, closely associated with prestigious Juilliard School in New York.

We are expecting students from all over the world. This year we are also collaborating with the renowned Eastman School of Music and we are inviting two students of this institution. It will be a true international meeting of young people that speak the same language; the language of Music!
