Un

There is more than one band with the name UN (or Un). One (Un) is a group featuring Marcia Bassett (Double Leopards), Tara Burke (Fursaxa), Grant Acker, and Tom Roach. They had two releases on the Siltbreeze label before disbanding in 1999. The other, UN (유엔), is a male duo from Korea. Although their music is a mix of different genres, most of their songs are predominantly pop ballads with a twist of R&B. UN is an acronym for "United N-generation". In 1999, the duo, who are both from the top universities in Korea, got together and formed UN but it wasn't until June of 2000 that they released their first album. In September 2005, 5 years after their debut and 5 albums later, their management agency, Laful Entertainment, anounced that the duo will disband after the expiration of their contract. The two members will focus on their seperate careers as individual actors and singers. ----- Another band with the name UN---> Not since Jennifer Herrema mumbled her way through the first couple of Royal Trux albums has a band extracted such beauty from disjointed chaos. Marcia Bassett's slurred vocals recall Nico after a few too many drinks, yet she sounds absolutely sublime when paired with guitarist Grant Acker's minimal strumming. UN's self-titled debut is a masterwork of bedroom psychedelia. "Sixty Bux" moves in slow motion, as UN attempts to create a soundtrack for your next drugged stupor. "Fast Money Blues" has absolutely nothing formal to do with the blues, but wallows in as much sadness and pain as John Lee Hooker. The cassette release has two side-long practices that are actually worth hearing. Messy and incoherent, UN sounds as if recording only takes place after long bouts of sleep deprivation, but few can match the utter desolation of this deceptively simple music. [Bill Cohen / Ben Goldberg] -------------------------- Another band with the name UN---> Grinding industro-electronics from HALO drummer R.Allen, a grimy & claustrophobic soundtrack to every gore film ever made.

Backgrounder: Larry Young - Into Somethin', 1964

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Larry Young was unlike any organist who preceded him. Rather than channel the Black church, he was more influenced by R&B and John Coltrane's tenor saxophone and chord changes on original pieces. One of Young's best middle-period albums—between his early soul-jazz recordings and his modal, avant-garde LPs—is Into Somethin', his first leadership work for Blue Note. If you listen carefully to Young's organ, you'll hear the Coltrane influence and how modern it sounds for 1964, when it was recorded. Prior ...

Guitarist Flávio Silva gives his beloved Brazilian jazz a new electrical charge with Eko, set to arrive June 7 on his own Break Free Records. The follow-up to 2018’s Break Free, Silva’s third album digs deeper into the fusion sound that has always been a simmering ingredient in his heady brew of various jazz and Brazilian flavors. Brazilian rhythms have, of course, been an indispensable piece of the jazz fusion puzzle ever since percussionist Airto Moreira played on Miles Davis’s ...

In the spring and early summer of 1969, guitarist Barney Kessel was on an extensive solo European tour. In each country, he picked up local players for his performances. In two of those countries—France and Italy, he recorded albums. In Rome, two albums were cut for Italian RCA—Reflections in Rome and Kessel's Kit, later known as Guitarra, on RCA's Camden budget line. Kessel's Kit is particularly interesting. For that album, recorded on May 7, 8 and 9 of 1969, Kessel ...
