Transit: Transit

Read "Transit" reviewed by Tom Greenland

While improvising musicians thrive on novel combinations of instruments and musical personalities, there is also the sense that close and repeated creative camaraderie fosters group cohesion. Transit, the eponymously titled debut recording from the quartet of drummer Jeff Arnal, bassist Reuben Radding, alto saxophonist Seth Misterka and trumpeter Nate Wooley--all active on the grassroots avant jazz scene burgeoning in boroughs of New York--boasts both qualities, producing a satisfying blend of freshness and familiarity. The album exhibits a ...

Transit: Transit

Read "Transit" reviewed by Troy Collins

A varied session with roots in cerebral European improvisation, AACM-inspired sound experimentation and New Thing-era ferocity, Transit's self-titled debut demonstrates expert communication, the key to any successful cooperative venture. Although organized by percussionist Jeff Arnal, the members of the quartet share writing credits, relying on collective improvisation as their principle strategy. Though Transit's music is rooted in free jazz, these players are not constrained by preconceived notions.

From the tumultuous vortex of sound that opens the album to ...

Jazz Village [Pias] Sets October 20, 2017 Release For World-renowned Bassist Composer Kyle Eastwood’s "In Transit"

Jazz Village [Pias] Sets October 20, 2017 Release For World-renowned Bassist Composer Kyle Eastwood’s "In Transit"

Source: EastWest Media

Capping two extraordinary decades as a recording and performing artist, Kyle Eastwood’s stylistically eclectic new album In Transit reflects the whirlwind reality of the breakneck schedule that Kyle and his longtime ensemble keep as they perform three quarters of the year in Europe—with a yearly jaunt to Asian countries and occasional swings to the U.S. The Los Angeles bred, Paris based bassist and composer estimates that about half of the tracks were “road tested,” with a few rendered completely fresh ...

New album from New York-based Time in Transit is rooted in city's bustling streets

Source: Lauren Rogers

Time in Transit could only emanate from New York. The band's freewheeling, gritty vision is rooted in the city's bustling streets. On the group's self-titled latest album, progressive jazz is made accessible for once as the genre's wild experimentation is tempered with sleek craftsmanship and an actual point. In other words, the songs do not meander in an aimless confusion. It becomes quickly obvious that saxophonist Glenn White and his band are sculpting actual soundtracks to their fevered imaginations, producing ...

Deep Cuts: Chicago Transit Authority "Free Form Guitar" (1969)

Source: Something Else!

By Pico We all know this, but sometimes we need to be reminded that Chicago is a mainstream rock band that was once a rock/jazz/blues/R&B/whack jazz masquerading as a mainstream rock band. Wait a minute, you say, “whack jazz"??? Not just whack jazz, but the extreme kind of whack jazz. If you still have a worn-out vinyl copy of the band's spectacular debut album Chicago Transit Authority, chances are that the black band between “Poem 58" and “South California Purples" ...

DVD Review: Chicago, "Chicago Transit Authority" (Quadrophonic Mix)

Source: Pop Dose

I don't think there's a band on the planet that's done a more thorough job of repackaging its hits than Chicago and in the 20 years since scoring its last meaningful hit, the band has really cranked the compilation machine into overdrive, churning out best-ofs, ballad collections, live albums, anniversary sets, and any other type of reissue you can think of, as well as a few you probably haven't. So when the Chicago catalog was folded under the Rhino umbrella ...

OUR WEEKLY LOOK AT CLASSIC ALBUMS GRABS THE BUS BACK TO A WINDY CITY GREAT'S DEBUT

This week in 1976, Chicago scored their first No. 1 hit with “If You Leave Me Now." However, the song was the group's eleventh Top 10 single in a career that was off to the races from day one. Such was the freshness and sculpted togetherness of their self-titled 1969 debut, when they were still known as the Chicago Transit Authority, ...
