Mitch Marcus Quintet, "Countdown 2 Meltdown," 2010

Mitch Marcus Quintet, "Countdown 2 Meltdown," 2010

Source: Gapplegate Music Review by Grego Edwards

The West Coast is alive for music. It's not a West Coast jazz in a cool sense for the most part these days. It's something else. San Franciscan (but also New Yorkian) Mitch Marcus and his quintet show us some of that in the riotcap avant romp Countdown 2 Meltdown (Porto Franco 009). First Acts Announced for Ornette Coleman's Meltdown

Following weeks of speculation about the acts that curator Ornette Coleman would select to include in his Meltdown, which begins at London's Southbank on Saturday June 13th, the mystery is almost over.

With more acts still to be revealed, those already announced have raised eyebrows and set pulses racing. Despite Coleman being the festival's first jazz curator, in true Meltdown fashion the acts cover a broad spectrum of music and cannot be easily pigeonholed. There is plenty of jazz but ...
