Riza Printup and Rose Rutledge Ensemble

Riza Printup (harp) and Rose Rutledge (flute) combine their dual jazz and classical backgrounds to explore a new sound that departs from the traditional expectations of their instruments. With original compositions as well as jazz arrangements, the duo takes flute and harp to a new improvisatory level. Their debut performance as collaborators will be April 25th at Drom in NYC.

Riza Printup, native of California, pursued her undergraduate studies (1990 - 1993) at the Indiana University School of Music, Bloomington, IN under the instruction of Distinguished Professor of Harp, Susan McDonald. Ms. Printup received her Bachelors of Arts in Music (1994) from Columbia College, Chicago, IL where she continued her studies in Jazz. She pursued her Master of Music from Georgia State University's School of Music under the tutelage of Elisabeth Remy. Other instructors include Dominique Piana, Linda Wood, Beverly Wesner-Hoehn, Deborah Henson-Conant, Stella Castellucci and Distinguished Professor of Jazz, David Baker.

Ms. Printup has recorded with acclaimed Jazz Trumpeter Marcus Printup on his three latest albums, A Time For Love (2011), Ballads All Night (2010) and Bird of Paradise (2007) on Steeplechase Records. She has worked and recorded with Grammy nominated pianist and composer Kenny Werner. In 2010, along with Mr. Werner's Wind Ensemble, she recorded award winning No Beginning, No End featuring Grammy winner Jazz Saxophonist Joe Lovano and Judi Silvano. She has performed and recorded along side the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra featuring Chick Corea and the music of Mr. Corea. Ms. Printup assisted Wynton Marsalis, Artistic Director of Jazz At Lincoln Center, with the harp part for one of his Orchestral works, Two in 3 which was commissioned for and debuted by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Printup has had the honor of performing Saint-Saëns's classic Le Cygne for harp and cello with virtuoso cellist Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble at the opening concert for SummerStage held in Central Park, NY. Ms. Printup continues to perform and record in the New York area.

Ms. Rutledge, originally from Seattle, grew up playing both the flute and the saxophone. She first came to New York as a participant in Jazz at Lincoln Center's Essentially Ellington Festival with the Roosevelt High School Jazz Band, which placed three years in a row. At the age of 18 she was invited to perform the world premiere of an arrangement of Eugene Bozza’s Jour d’ete a la Montagne, with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra and in the same year won the Metro Solo and Ensemble Competition on Alto Saxophone.
