Russ Solomon, founder of the legendary Tower Records chain, died on Sunday night, while drinking whisky and watching The Oscars. Solomon, 92, died from a heart attack, his son, Michael Solomon, told the Sacramento Bee. “Ironically, he was giving his opinion of what someone was wearing that he thought was ugly, then asked (his wife) Patti to refill his whisky,” Solomon told the paper. His father was apparently dead by the time Patti returned with the drink. Solomon was synonymous ...

Solomon King - Medicine (2011)

Solomon King - Medicine (2011)

Source: Something Else!

Over the course of the striking, stripped-down Medicine, former Detroit autoworker Solomon King returns to that moment when the blues moved inexorably away from the uplift that defined gospel music, and ultimately toward rock 'n' roll and then hip hop. The blues sought, at first, to define every-day concerns, but there were no easy answers. As with King's efforts here, it sought to render those things more real, to define them. Solomon Burke dies at Amsterdam airport at 70

Source: Schicker

By TOBY STERLING Solomon Burke was born to the sound of music in an upstairs room of a Philadelphia church and went on to become one of the greatest soul singers of the 1960s, renowned as among music's premier vocalists. Solomon Burke Completes an 'Impossible' Musical Mission

Solomon Burke Completes an 'Impossible' Musical Mission

Source: All About Jazz

Mission accomplished: Solomon Burke's new album, Nothing's Impossible, was produced by Memphis studio ace Willie Mitchell.

Solomon Burke and Willie Mitchell were friends for years without ever laying eyes on each other.

The King of Rock & Soul and the revered Memphis producer who made R&B stars out of Ann Peebles, Syl Johnson and, most famously, Al Green, spoke frequently over the years. But it wasn't until Burke finally visited Mitchell in 2008 that these longtime pillars of soul music ...
