Nova Jazz Orchestra: In a Lucid Moment

Read "In a Lucid Moment" reviewed by Jack Bowers

This is the fifth album by the Nova Jazz Orchestra, at least three of which have been recorded live at O'Gara's nightclub in St. Paul, Minnesota. If anyone doubts that this one is live, he or she need only listen to Ted Godbout's wimpy piano. Not a knock on Godbout, of course, but in-studio pianos are, generally speaking, more (pardon the pun) upright. Everyone else sounds respectable, especially for an in-concert performance, and the audience is uncommonly well-behaved and unobtrusive. ...

The Nova Jazz Orchestra: Ireland

Read "Ireland" reviewed by Jack Bowers

So where have these guys been hiding? In the “Shamrock Room” at O’Gara’s Bar and Grill in St. Paul, MN? If you’re in the neighborhood, make a reservation! We’re only half–serious; as this is big–band Jazz, the chances are that reservations won’t be necessary. But a trip to O’Gara’s to hear the Nova Jazz Orchestra in person would certainly be worth one’s time. Nova is an admirable “neighborhood band,” and Ireland, dedicated to O’Gara’s, is arguably the best of its ...

Philadelphia Drummer Tom Cohen Delivers A Love Letter To Brazilian Bossa Nova On 'Embraceable Brazil,' Releasing October 10 On Versa Records

Source: Terri Hinte Publicity

Drummer Tom Cohen’s lifelong love affair with bossa nova music culminates with the October 10 release of Embraceable Brazil on Versa Records. More than a decade in the making, Cohen’s sixth album features a panoply of creative, able-bodied musicians in various combinations, adding up to a stunning rainbow array of colors, textures, and interpretations in the bossa mode. The very facts of its creation betray Embraceable Brazilas a labor of love on Cohen’s part. The drummer—who has been smitten with ...

Backgrounder: - Happen to Bossa Nova (1963)

For July 4th, America's birthday, I thought The Hi-Lo's Happen to Bossa Nova (Reprise), from 1963, would be a fitting Backgrounder. It's summery, breezy and my favorite Hi-Lo's album. Arranged by Chuck Sagle, the Hi-Lo's are in top form and in sync with the surfy feel of the bossa nova, BG/G. That's short for “Before Getz/Gilberto," when the Brazil's bossa still had a wistful, pop articulation. After the release of Getz/Gilberto, featuring The Girl From Ipanema, the form grew more ...

Perfection: Teddy Charles - Borodin Bossa Nova (1963)

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

In April and May of 1963, Teddy Charles, accompanied by an all-start group of musicians, recorded Russia Goes Jazz: Swinging Themes From the Great Russian Composers (United Artists). The point of the LP, conceived by Teddy, was to record Russian classical works that influenced American popular songs. One of them was Borodin Bossa Nova, recorded in April 1963, with Jerome Richardson (fl), Zoot Sims (ts), Eric Dolphy (b-cl), Pepper Adams (bar), Teddy Charles (vib), Hall Overton (p), Jimmy Raney (g), ...

Backgrounder: Dave Pike - Bossa Nova Carnival

Backgrounder: Dave Pike - Bossa Nova Carnival

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Dave Pike is little known today but back in the early 1960s, he was a hip up-and-coming vibraphonist with enormous promise. He wasn't quite Gary Burton or Bobby Hutcherson, but he had a strong following and made great records. Pike had a cool, beat approach on the vibes and his playing taste was sophisticated and hip. Pike started recording with a quartet in 1956 called the Jazz Couriers. In 1958, he recorded Solemn Meditation with Paul Bley, Charlie Haden and ...

Backgrounder: Vic Lewis - Plays Bossa Nova

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Vic Lewis was a British jazz guitarist and bandleader with enormous taste and ease. In 1963, he recorded a superb album entitled Vic Lewis Plays Bossa Nova at Home and Away (CSD). The first side was recorded in London in February and the second side was recorded in Hollywood in January. What's remarkable about this album are the musicians brought in for the dates. In both the London and Hollywood sessions, we're talking about the very upper tier of studio ...

Backgrounder: Roberto Menescal - A Nova Bossa

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Guitarist-composer Roberto Menescal is one of the bossa nova's pioneers. Though his songs were recorded by other artists years earlier, his first leadership album, A Nova Bossa, was released in 1964 and it was a stunner. The album featured Roberto Menescal (g), Henri Ackselrud (fl), Eumir Deodato (p), Ugo Marotta (vib), Sérgio Barrozo (b) and João Palma (d), with arrangements by Eumir Deodato, Roberto Menescal and Ugo Marotta. The 12 tracks are Samba De Verão, Aruanda, Só Tinha De Ser ...

Backgrounder: Lionel Hampton, 'Bossa Nova Jazz'

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Bossa Nova Jazz: Lionel Hampton All Stars shouldn't work, but it does. Just looking at the album cover without hearing it leads you to assume that the bossa nova would be a stretch for a swinger and jump-blueser like Hampton. But its authenticity and sensuality exceeds expectations every time I put it on. It's really Bobby Plater's album. Recorded in September and October of 1963 for Hampton's own Glad Hamp label (and issued in Japan on Nippon Columbia), his all-stars ...

By now I'm sure you've guessed that I have a sizable digital collection of rare Brazilian bossa nova albums from the early 1960s, when the new genre was at its peak. Collecting that period is one of my many obsessions. If I were to blindfold you and lead you into a used record store, where I placed your hands on albums in a bin of Brazilian LPs released between 1962 and 1966, you could pull out as many as you ...

Tenor saxophonist Zoot Sims recorded two bossa nova albums for the Colpix label—New Beat Bossa Nova in August 1962 and New Beat Bossa Nova Vol. 2 in November of that year. They were nearly every bit as swinging as Stan Getz's Jazz Samba album recorded in February '62, just not as widely distributed and without the marketing and radio muscle of Verve. Here are both Zoot Sims albums without ads. Put it on and enjoy while you work, answer emails ...
