Born in Medellín, Antioquia, Colombia, in 1992, Santiago Restrepo is a renowned jazz drummer and composer whose work spans across multiple albums, books, and performances.
Career Highlights
- 2013: Santiago released his debut album, Indefensión, as a bandleader, featuring Sam Farley on piano and Eduardo González on double bass. This marked the beginning of his journey as a significant voice in the jazz world.
- 2017: He followed up with Senderos, an album dedicated to the nature and landscapes of Colombia, featuring compositions inspired by native trees. The album includes a special appearance by maestro Antonio Arnedo. That same year, Santiago published his first book, The Extra-Musicality of Jazz, offering insights into the challenges and complexities of being a jazz musician in daily life.
- 2018: Santiago released his first live performance, Senderos en Vivo en la Cámara de Comercio de Medellín. He was also invited to perform at BarranquiJazz, one of Colombia’s most prestigious international jazz festivals.
- 2019: Santiago was granted permanent residency in the United States due to his artistic merits. He became an active part of New York City's vibrant jazz scene, performing in various clubs and venues throughout the city.
- 2020: He recorded Muestras: Improvisaciones Libres, his first album of experimental music, where he delved into abstract language and free improvisation on the drums, further expanding his musical range.
- 2022: Santiago paid tribute to the legendary saxophonist John Coltrane with a live performance of A Love Supreme in Medellín, honoring one of jazz's most influential works.
- 2023: Santiago signed with the prestigious label, Música Corriente, and released his latest album, Intemporal. This “Suite” style album features collaborations with major figures such as Antonio Arnedo, Sam Farley, Humberto Arias, and Felipe Gómez. The album seamlessly blends modal harmony, controlled poly-rhythms, and free improvisation, creating a coherent and organic musical narrative.

In May 2024, Intemporal was included in the official list of the most influential Colombian jazz albums by Radio Nacional de Colombia, in an article written by Luis Daniel Vega Pinzón. Additionally, it was highlighted in the article "The Sowing of the Best Local Albums of the Year" by the magazine Generación, El Colombiano, under the direction of journalist Jaime Monsalve.”
