Color: Voicemeal

Read "Voicemeal" reviewed by Robert Spencer

Color is a trio with a huge sound, as all three players have tremendous arsenals at their command. This is an intriguing hybrid: straight-ahead jazz, balladry, funk, even some elements of post-Ayler playing. Most of these elements can be found here and there on each of these tracks.

Tenor and soprano saxophonist Matt Langley can play with delicate melodic precision ("Voicemeal," “Full Mooner") as well as let it rip into the stratosphere ("Another Deadline"). Keyboardist Chris Decato can play straight-ahead ...

Color Video: Bill Evans in Copenhagen, 1970

Earlier this month, when I reviewed the newly released album Bill Evans: Treasures (Elemental Music), I wrote about the tranquilizing affect that Denmark seemed to have on Evans. I pointed out that many of his best live recordings were made there, especially between 1965 and 1970. As you listen to Treasures, you can hear that Evans was thoroughly relaxed and it shows in his measured playing, delicate attack and lyrical optimism. Earlier this week, Dave Thompson brought to my attention ...

On July 13, 1960, pianist Bud Powell performed at the Antibes Jazz Festival on the French Riviera. His on-camera solo recording of Sweet and Lovely and Swing Napoli have been colorized, giving Powell and his playing a new, more vivid dimension. Two notes of interest. Powell didn't sit straight on a the piano but off to the side. He also rarely looked at the keyboard, which is remarkable. Here's Bud Powell in color in 1960... And here's Powell with Charles ...

Clark Terry: 'Color Changes'

The revived Candid Records has just reissued another five albums from its archives. Founded in 1960 as a subsidiary of Cadence Records, the label was overseen by jazz author and critic Nat Hentoff, who served as Candid's A&R director. This meant he chose what to record and how to produce the records. The last time I posted about Candid in April, the label had just re-issued Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus (1960), Max Roach's We Insist!: Freedom Now Suite (1960), ...

Color Video: Bill Evans Trio, Helsinki, 1970

In 1970, the Bill Evans Trio visited the home of Finnish composer Ilkka Kussisto for a private performance and conversation. The event was taped for Finnish TV. Kuusisto is a classical composer who was the conductor at the Helsinki City Theater and later general manager of the Finnish National Opera. His house was on Lauttasaari island in Helsinki, about five minutes west of the city center. For years, tape of the visit by the trio—Evans on piano, Eddie Gomez on ...

Color Videos: Horace Silver Quintet

While writing yesterday, I fell into a Horace Silver groove. Funk meets hard bop, with a twist of Silver's spectacular rhythmic counterpoint and chord voicings. Which sent me onto YouTube to see what was new with Horace. There, I found a bunch of videos that had been colorized. Now you can see and hear them, too. Here are seven Horace Silver color videos: Here's Nutville and Song for My Father, colorized on the Danish TV show Jazz Omkring Midnat, in ...

Miles Davis in Milan in Color, 1964

This clip will likely be familiar to you, but chances are you saw it in black and white. A couple of weeks ago, the footage was uploaded colorized. The concert featured the Miles Davis Quintet at the Teatro dell'Arte in Milan, Italy, on October 11th, 1964. When I saw it, thanks to Gilles D'Elia in Paris, a funny thing happened. The music became more interesting and gripping. Mind you, I tend to despise colorized films, but a clip of historic ...

King of Jazz: Two-Color Print

King of Jazz: Two-Color Print

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

In April 1930, at the advent of the “talkie," Universal Pictures released King of Jazz. The 105-minute film was a revue of Paul Whiteman's music through film and animation. But what made the movie truly special was that it was released using a two-color process. Color films weren't new, per se. France had released the first in 1903 called La Vie at la Pssion de Jesus Christ in Pathechrome while The Gulf Between was released in the U.S. in 1917 ...

In the early 1960's the American Goodyear Tire Co. commissioned a series of short jazz-performance films as part of a promotional campaign. Why Google and Facebook don't do the same today with classic jazz, rock and soul artists is beyond me. Goodyear's jazz movies were filmed in color by multiple cameras on 35mm and the sound was recorded on professional stereo. When presented, the shows were shown in 16mm and mono sound. In 1962, Goodyear filmed Louis Armstrong and his ...
