The Point

The POINT holds a degree from the University of Rhode Island and currently performs and teaches in the greater Philadelphia area. He started on trumpet at a young age and picked up guitar in high school. After graduation, POINT moved back to PA where he studied with Glenn Lyonns at West Chester State Univerity. After a late night Chet Atkins special on PBS, he moved to the less formal styles of jazz and country and learned many fingerstyle pieces. The POINT currently performs a 2 hour set of classical and jazz solo pieces at East Coast cafes and weddings. His personal studies continue with classical pieces such as Granada and he recently added Bohemian Rhapsody to his song list. He is currently seeking funding or sponsorship for his first jazz CD which contains both trumpet and guitar instrumentals. The POINT is available for private guitar lessons, partoes and weddings.

Bobby Cole: A Point of View

Bobby Cole: A Point of View

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

Like Bobby Troup and Bobby Scott, Bobby Cole was a songwriter, arranger and lounge pianist-singer. But unlike the other two Bobbys, Bobby Cole is virtually unknown today. That's largely due to the year Cole came up, in 1960, and his decision to pass on recording opportunities with major labels because of the junk they wanted him to sing and their refusal to let him record songs he wrote. In retrospect, Cole was right. [Photo above of Bobby Cole] Want proof? ...

Gary McFarland: Departure Point

Gary McFarland: Departure Point

Source: JazzWax by Marc Myers

In the late 1950s and early '60s, a new breed of jazz arranger began to surface. Some were deeply influenced by modern classical orchestral music. Others such as Johnny Mandel, Manny Albam, Johnny Pate and Oliver Nelson were swayed by the drama and subtle incidental melodies of television and the movies. Among the latter group, the most innovative and musically dashing was Gary McFarland. Born in Oregon in 1933, McFarland was something of a savant, teaching himself to play boogie-woogie ...
